The Bubbles We Build - Samuel Roberts Reporting

It is said that the enemy of progress is comfort. I believe PT Barnhum said that. Technically he said “Comfort is the enemy of progress” but it's my article and I’ll word things how I want. All jest aside, we as human beings have this uncanny ability to build for ourselves an echo chamber of like-minded thinkers with similar environments, this however does not mean people that agree but rather people who think along the same genres you could say, people that enjoy politics…. Know lots of people who disagree with them in regards to politics, even though someone who doesn't care for politics knows neither crowd and isn't interested in knowing them. Sports fans know other Sports fans, and Sci-Fi Lovers know other Sci-Fi Lovers. etc.

These “worlds'' virtual you could say… or at least social, are all around us, these “Bubbles”, going back to the old phrase, “you can't see the forest from the trees”. There is a lack of awareness of the other bubbles around us, for example; to one person SL is one thing.. And to another person, it's something else.. To some it's SL: the drama simulator, to others it's SL: the online Barbie Game and to another SL: the explorer and create, Minecraft for adults. For me it's SL: The Music business simulator, that's my bubble. I've been an SL musician for years, but that's not relevant because it has nothing to do with the article and I make terrible music. The point is… these bubbles, these ideas.. They ARE subjective… in nature.. SL isn't one thing.. It's the bubble you see, nothing more, it is multi-faceted beyond comprehension. SL is almost a billion-dollar real-world economy based around virtual clothing and real estate. It's also this cool game where you troll people as a half-naked lizard waifu. It's both.. and neither…

BUT what if.. What if I traveled inter-dimensionally between the multiverse from one bubble to another.. What if instead of attending a venue.. I went exploring. What if the explorers station themselves at a known troll location and heckled strangers for the “lulls” what if the Real Estate Mogul attended a few live shows, found a singer they loved, and became a fan? What If I stepped outside of my bubble into something I’ve never done or been involved in, that would be quite the adventure.

Heading back to our original thought, Comfort… this thing that says to us “This is fine, I'm good here” is the thing that halts our progress, there are experiences, there are feelings, thoughts, truths I haven't learned because I'm comfortable here in my SL bubble, I log on every day, I go to my live venues I hear my friends sing, I sing, I talk to fans, then I log off, how small is my bubble… how limiting are these restrictions I place on myself, SL IS only what I can envision it being, it's comfortable to do what I enjoy over and over.. But perhaps there is something else, something just beyond the horizon that will give me more joy than I anticipated waiting only for my own courage, not to try new things, but the courage to be uncomfortable.

Well. This week I did just that, your fearless courageous intrepid reporter here took himself outside of his bubble and I did some things I'd never done before. I went exploring.. But not just randomly sim hoping, I assigned myself a purpose, gave myself a mission if you will, I explored the history of this virtual verse we inhabit, I went to Sansara, more accurately Da Boom, SL’s oldest region and sim, I went to the mainland, explored some key iconic sites but not just looked, I didn't just travel and stare like some kind of peeping tom gawking my eye spheres on all the wonders oh no no no. I read while I traveled, I read the wiki, I read blogs about the legends and myths surrounding some of these places, I felt like I was hearing ghost stories, and my mind was never quite sure if what I was hearing was true or not, my mind began to wander about where certain people were now, I had a 1000 questions to ask the right person if I bumped into them, my quest for knowledge left me with questions I didn't know existed. My mind felt stretched, and my comfort at first had dwindled but what I gained was much much better, I was pulled from my same ole same day to day routine and thrown into an adventure, an actual adventure, like something from a story, I was the main character in an episodic tale and I felt alive.

Bubbles.. They have their purpose, and they are comfortable.. But I'm beginning to think we owe it to ourselves to poke a little tentative finger outside our bubble and begin to touch what could be. So my question to the reader is what now? And I will leave you with the immortal words of Helen Keller Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

Lanai’s Diary: 18 years in Second Life is shameless AF but worth it

Hey y'all, it’s Lanai. That random media ghost floating behind the scenes in Second life. In my current situation I’m just  kickin back on a Wednesday night in New Jersey. Today is officially the first day of Summer and my ass is in the house staring out the window watching clouds move across the sky with light rain. What a great sign! (rolls eyes) but at the end of the day I truly can say I busted my ass.errr…brain today and deserve a little SL time…I came home, showered and found no alcohol on my wine shelf and no more pre-rolled mini blunts left in my tin from the local dispensary.( It’s 100% recreational here so don’t judge me)  I’m no alkie pothead but I like that mellow buzz after a long day of work.I earned that shit and almost want to run into the kitchen now and make Raman noodle. I got the munchies… I haven't eaten dinner yet but I might grab something quick,  slap it in the microwave while writing.

Cop a squat and chill with me as I ramble on. I don’t mind. I’ve been behind the scenes long enough to feel comfortable enough to write as if I'm speaking directly to my friends.

I’ve been exploring the grid and writing about Second Life for 18 years now. Many of you, including myself, have raised babies into young adults during that time. When I reflect back on the beginning of my virtual world media journey, I think wow…..I’ve experienced more of the world through virtual lenses and meeting people from around the world on a more personal level than traveling around the real world.

I still haven't gotten my passport yet but I'm unsure if I am missing out on anything superspectacular abroad or even in Canada.  I've been to Hawaii,  a few beautiful Caribbean islands, The Gulf of Mexico, the dirty jersey shore and all up and down the east coast.

Last year, I spent my birthday in the heart of Savannah, Georgia at a hotel. Chillaxin’ on the rooftop,  laid out in a poolside round bed cabana while sippin’ berry Ciroc. I felt the only buzz and had a great time just watching people. It kinda felt like what I was in Second Life.   I don’t do clubbin’ in RL.  I’m too grown and tired of the BS that goes along with it. But in SL I will twerk circles around you with my collection of dance moves all while holding a wine glass without spilling a single drop.

Shopping…ehhh. In SL I blow through Lindens on shopping sprees…..sooo not true, I like swag bags, freebies and stuff from designers. In RL,  I browse Amazon for whatever I need and take my returns to Kohl’s.. I’m not a Gucci and Prada type of person. However, I've been known to clean up nicely for special occasions both in SL and real life. That reminds me… I need to get my “sparkles” covered but that Ulta bill in real life hurts my feelings.

I’m originally from Pennsylvania. In the past year I moved to Naples, Florida, a couple of months later, I moved back to Pa…. a couple months after that…landed a job in New Jersey and well ... .packed it back up and kept it movin’. I’m not a fugitive or anything simple like that. I’m either in a mid-life crisis or I am gaining my independence and living life by my terms.

I’m settling in and starting a whole new life. It’s crazy, scary, exciting and sometimes even sad because I don’t really have any family nearby. The one thing I can say is I faced my fears and it's empowering. There’s a lot going on in my real world. I’ve been busy working and settling.

If you feel stuck in a life where you feel like you need change, do it. With determination comes strength and with strength comes willpower. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and you will become unstoppable. I have to thank my dearest friends for being there for me when I needed them the most and for having more faith in me than I had in myself. The sky isn’t the limit, there’s a whole universe out there. I just feel lucky enough to be in it with you.

There’s no real point to this long ass ramble, I just wanted to say hi, it’s been a while.

MOVIES AND SCREENINGS IN SECOND LIFE- AS SEEN ON THE DESTINATION GUIDE- Lanai Jarrico reporting...

Ever find yourself wandering the grid looking for something to do? Has club hopping and pop, lock and droppin' it got  you bored? Try something different!  There are a couple of Cinemas in Second Life that offer a variety of movies and screenings you can watch with your group of friends or that special someone. Check them out!

SADDLES – COUNTRY FAVS FOR THE DISCERNING FAN: JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING

In the 1980 hit movie, The Blues Brothers, Elwood asks a proprietor of a bar where they are scheduled to perform, “What kind of music do you usually have here?”  The proprietor replies “Oh, we got both kinds. We got Country AND Western.“

I was sim hopping the other day, looking to find some really Great Country Music, when a hopeful pop-up appeared on my screen… “Do you want to allow music from this source?”  I clicked “Allow” and what immediately flowed from my speakers was a feast for the Aural Senses – The Saddles take on Country Music. Saddles is a place that excels in that department as well.  Their particular mix of Music is “Just what the Doctor ordered” for any true lover of the genre.   My Spidey senses kicked into hi gear and I looked for the owner of this musical oasis in a desert of pedestrian music.  I saw Ashley (littlebit31okla), deep in the throes of preparing for her Special Event set to kick off the weekend. I asked if she could spare a few moments to share with me the story of her success at Saddles, and she graciously consented.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic) JB:    So, tell me, Ashley.  Just what is Saddles all about?

Ashley (littlebit31okla) AL: Saddles is about having a fun enjoyable environment to enjoy time in second life by spending time with others enjoying Live Music, Dj Events, Concerts, and the beauty of arts in second life, place where people can come enjoy, relax, with top quality entertainment.

JB:      Where did you get the idea for Saddles, and is there some history here?

AL:  Saddles was created back in 2014 by myself and a female friend of mine. She was also a real-life friend and we both love and enjoy riding horse so Saddles was the name that we both came up with.  She was only able to be in SL a short time, because her real life would not allow her to remain here.  Saddles became a Live Music Venue loved by many. Due to health issues, I was forced to close for a few years, but I still had many supporters that gave me advice and showed me the way of the friendly live music community.

JB:      Who managed to put this thing together and what role did each of you play?

AL:    Gaza and Ashley Bayside both play a part in sim design and landscaping

JB:      Could you share some of the interesting things that visitors and guests can do at Saddles?

AL:   Enjoy Live Music, Dj Events, Concerts, Games/Tabletop, Romantic Swan ride through the tunnel of love under the club and under the dance floor in the ballroom, Ballroom dancing, Coffee shop, Pool to relax by and visit with friends, and a dining area for couples to enjoy.  Saddles can also do weddings for group members.  We also have Hunts, Shopping areas for rental space.  Artists can use Saddles to display art and have Art openings and similar events in the ballroom or around the Gallery,

JB:    What sets Saddles apart from the many other clubs out there with a similar theme?

AL:   Saddles has a wide range of events as well as activities for members and guests to enjoy,

JB:      Who do you hope to attract to your build? What special group of people might find Saddles especially appealing?

AL:  We hope to attract County Music fans as well as Live music performers and fans, Artists,  and  Photographers

JB:      And how about the future?  Do you have any planned changes in mind?

AL:   We are very happy with the current build.  We still have little more we like to do but we are keeping that a secret for now, with more to come, so keep coming back enjoying what we have to offer,

JB:      What has been your greatest challenge in building Saddles?

AL:   Finding the quality of staff that holds to Saddles’ top quality standards

JB:       Do you host Special Events?  And how might someone learn of any scheduled activities here?

AL:  Saddles Holds Special VIP Events as well as upcoming Charity events.  All Saddles events can be found on our FB Page as well as in “SL Events”, so join our Saddles Groups or stop by the venue and check out our event board,

JB:       Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

AL:   Over the last 10 year I have meet a lot of people come through the door of Saddles and I have to say I have been truly blessed after all these years. I can say that some of my dearest friends are still today walking back though the door of Saddles, coming in enjoying our events as well as memories we all have shared in the past years.  So many people missed Saddles and asked for me to bring it back so we all Saddled up and grabbed the rains to bring back Saddles so more memories can be made and more friends to enjoy,

Please share with us any social media, Websites, Flickr, etc that may be of interest to our readers? Flickr:

So, there you have I folk!  For some of the BEST Country music out there in a fun and wholesome environment, you really do owe it to yourself to check out the scene at Saddles. You’ll be glad you did, and may even make a lifelong friend or two.

Go ahead. And when you do, tell ‘em Josh sent ya.

You’ll be glad you did.

Be there! ALOHA!

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: “Edward Hopper” Exhibition at La Gallery~ Ely Catronis Reporting…

Glancing around New Orleans, you see this dark diner, it seems familiar, you cannot quite place it, La Gallery invites you to walk inside.  This is when you realize you have just entered one of Edward Hopper's most famous paintings, Nighthawks.

This is one of the many works of art featured in the exhibit of his work being showcased at La Gallery developed for you to learn and enjoy.  Edward Hopper, a man who felt “If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.”

I stepped off the trolley in front of La Gallery and met up with Lalle to learn more about this unique exhibit.

Interview with Lalle Vanbeeck-Na (lallena)

Ely: Hello Lalle!  It is wonderful to be here at La Gallery again. This is your second exhibition here at La Gallery, we covered your first show here. That was such a wonderful exhibit. I will make sure to include the link to that article for our readers.

Is there anything you would like to share about that show before we head into this one?

Lalle:I could  add that the exhibition is still relevant since it is still possible to visit it in New Orleans . I really liked doing it. The theme of the exhibition "Celebrities who are also painters" is quite unique, because I think it has never been done before even in RL. This asked me for some work so I think it will remain permanent.

Ely: Oh that is great!  We can make sure everyone gets the Slurl to the new location for it.  Keeping it permanent must help you keep your overall purpose of La Gallery thrive on in Second Life. Can you explain with us what the purpose and goal of La Gallery is in SL?  What do you want to achieve?

Lalle:I wanted to create, to do something concrete in SL. I did it in a field that interests me: the art world. It is first of all a personal satisfaction. The Gallery, like any gallery, is a space dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of art in general, the main purpose being to present works to the public and to promote artists. The theme of these two exhibitions was close to my heart but with artists who did not really need promotion. We are in SL, so I think that the next exhibitions will also be devoted to artists who evolve in SL.

Ely: That sounds wonderful.  You mentioned art close to your heart. This new exhibit features the artwork of Edward Hopper. What inspired you to choose the work of this one artist?

Lalle: I had the chance to see the exhibition devoted to Edward Hopper 10 years ago in Paris. I was still young but I had really liked it. Later in my studies, I did a presentation on Hopper. So I knew the subject quite well. It seemed interesting to me to present his artwork. And even if he is a very famous American painter of the 20th century, I realize that many people do not know him.

Between his paintings, his etchings, his illustrations..., Hopper has produced a very diverse and impressive work. Through this exhibition, maybe some will know him a little better.

Ely:  Walking around the gallery with you, I was able to experience first hand with you many features of this exhibit. Can you share with our readers a little about what to expect at the exhibit?  What makes it unique?  Are there special pieces that you feature?

Lalle: You will see many paintings by Edward Hopper. It is a fairly complete panorama of his work, all presented chronologically and according to the techniques used (watercolor, oil painting, etchings, drawings, illustrations, etc.). There was a lot to show. We needed a method of presentation.

I don't think there is something very unique in this exhibition because all his paintings are  known. We did not discover a painting hidden in an attic. The only thing that could be called unique is that we have reproduced the bar from his famous painting "Nighthawks" at the entrance of the gallery, which you may have walked through, in New Orleans City.

Ely:  I did enjoy being able to sit at the counter in the diner. Also watching the video about him was interesting as well. I'm Curious, do you have one piece of Hopper's that is your favorite?

Lalle: If I have to choose one, I'm not going to be very original,  I'm going to choose the most famous "Nighthawks". This iconic artwork depicts a late night scene in a bar with three customers and a waiter (the bar we reproduced in New Orleans). There is a somewhat strange, dark and worrying atmosphere that I like; between the lit interior of the bar and the darkened street outside. I could have mentioned many others like "Gas" with its red gas pumps, "Automat" or "Chop Suey" for  example.

Ely:  You have all the works throughout the decades of this work. Is there an era of his that you prefer over the others?

Lalle: I appreciate all the periods and all of his work. However, I have a preference for scenes of urban life, streets, buildings with this very precise architecture... but also interiors and the characters around, often lonely and melancholy.

Ely:  If someone is interested How can an artist showcase their work here? What type of art are you looking for?

Lalle: He just has to contact us... and present his work... It must please us at least a minimum  and likely to please others as well... We are  open to all types of art... We are  not closed.

Ely:  Anything else you would like to share?

Lalle:  I just hope that people will come and visit and also appreciate the exhibition and the work of Edward Hopper. I really enjoyed doing it even if it took a long time to set up.
