Talkin' Turkey... Where To Get Thanksgiving Dinner On SL - STACEY CARDALINES REPORTING

Thanksgiving is coming, and that means someone- maybe you- is hosting dinner. You get no sympathy from this journalist, who lives near Plymouth, Massachusetts in a town founded by Myles Standish. I host every year, no question. Big ol' Catholic family, too. Local turkeys know my name and fear me.

Cooking for crowds is always hectic and is rarely fun. All you can do is set out a ton of food and keep the alcohol flowing. That is how it works on SL, as well.

Avatars don't need to eat. We're not gigapets, and you could starve your avatar for years without her losing a pound. Eating is something you do for grins on SL. That said, you should try to do it well when you do it.

This goes double when it is Thanksgiving. You most likely eat with real people on Thanksgiving, but you may be on SL later in the day. You may even end up hosting an SL Thanksgiving party, and people coming to that party are going to be expecting turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce and all that other good stuff. You can f**k around on Easter and Christmas with roast beef or ham... but in November, you'd better be bringin' the Gobbler. If not, I can't even do business with you.

Since avatars don't need food, that leads to supply/demand problems when looking to layout a turkey dinner spread in your SL home or business. Even if you find a friggin' turkey, good luck finding butternut squash or green bean casserole. There may be a potato farm sim somewhere, and some other sim might have a cranberry bog, but you're eventually going to hit a wall somewhere on the menu if you try to score the ingredients individually.

Fortunately, the good people at the Food Connection have taken care of all that for you. You can go in, drop what I believe is 200 Ls and have a big huge table with all the Thanksgiving necessities. Turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, sweet potato pie, stuffing, some green thing that I assume is associated with Southern sorts of Thanksgiving, cranberry sauce, rolls, carrots and all the other stuff that Charlie Brown didn't come up with in his Thanksgiving special dinner.

Here's the address... Food Connection  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Depoz%20W/121/28/27

A few facts on certain Thanksgiving menu items that will let you DOMINATE the dinner table conversation:

- Turkeys are not indigenous to the nation of Turkey. They are native, and were at one time unique, to North America. The Spanish sold them to Arab merchants, and the bird was introduced to Europe via Turkish markets. They have been common holiday fare in Europe since The 1600s. In the classic story A Christmas Carol, Scrooge springs for a turkey as he redeems himself.

- "Cranberry sauce" is what John Lennon says at the end of Strawberry Fields Forever. He liked nonsense words in his song, and he thought "cranberry sauce" sounded funny. I have read that he detested the stuff. Many misheard the lyric as "I buried Paul," and the Paul Is Dead rumors gained steam.

- The Irish became so dependent on potatoes that, when a blight hit Irish spuds in the 1840s, the resulting famine killed 25% of the Irish population.

- Stephen King originally handed his publisher a story called Children Of The Asparagus, but his agent talked him into using Corn. OK, I made that up.

- People in the southern US, bitter over losing the Civil War, viewed Pumpkin Pie as a symbol of Yankee culture and refused to serve it. Sweet Potato Pie was substituted into holiday menus in the former Confederate states.

- Green Bean Casserole was invented by the Campbell's Soup people and is the major mover of Cream of Mushroom Soup. Dorcas Riley headed the group that invented it. Cranberry Sauce was invented by Ocean Spray, a Massachusetts cranberry conglomerate. The same guy that introduced cranberry sauce to America also invented Cranapple and various cocktails such as the Cape Codder, the Madras, the Sea Breeze, the Cosmopolitan, and- no joke- roll-on deodorant.

- The original spread at the first Thanksgiving was waterfowl, venison, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Spotlight on T&N Creations- Ghost Explorer Reporting...

And I said to myself...What a wonderful world!

Second Life - A place where all your dreams can come true.  You can have a perfect home, meet friends from around the world, ask this perfect stranger out, go for dinner in Paris, dessert in Japan and a final gondola ride in Venice before dancing the night away at Apollo's Garden.

Now you are thinking of the next stage of this magical relationship; SL Partnering!  But it is so costly.  You want all the lights and glam, but it is so expensive! You want perfect coordination, but it is so costly!  You want to remember your special day forever, but it is not in the budget!

Fear not.  What if I told you that your dream day is achievable without you having to rob a Linden bank?  I came across Second Life's perfect events location while flying my Fatal Custom Widowmaker Bike over a few sims and landed at T&N Creations.  I was welcomed by Trinity and Nawty Rivers, owners of T&N Creations. The beautiful ladies were wonderfully accommodating and granted me a tour and an interview right away.

I marveled at the landing point where you can check yourself and make sure that you are fully rezzed before proceeding.  The pathway leading to the venue can only be described as a dream garden where the colors are perfectly planned for visual effects.  Rides are available to take you to the event venue in case you do not want to walk or fly.  Need a place to hang out while waiting for the ultimate hour, an elegant hidden room is at your disposal.  The venue itself is a work of art.  Imagine the option to change colors to match your vision at the touch of a button.  Beauty can be partially described but must be seen to be enjoyed.

Now, you are probably reading this and thinking that this will cost me a prim arm and leg.  Again, don't worry.  I sat down with Trinity Rivers and Nawty Rivers for a casual interview while sampling mint tea from their offices.

Interview

Ghost Explorer- Beautiful venue you have here.  I am impressed.

Nawty  Rivers- Thank you! Trin and I put a lot of hard work and sweat into it.

Ghost Explorer - What was the motivating factor in creating this amazing place?

Trinity Rivers  - Someone's wedding day is very important.  It should not be cheapened by the amount of lindens you can spend.  This venue is our lowest priced venue. Even though people may not have much or want to spend as much,  we want them to have the best we can give.

Ghost Explorer - That is very noble of you.  Anything else you can host here?

Trinity Rivers - Oh we can do anything with style.  For example,  weekend getaway.

Nawty Rivers - Birthday parties, anniversary events, vow renewals, romantic proposals.

Ghost Explorer - So what if someone wants to do something really quick like a drive-through wedding?

Nawty Rivers - Vegas style?  We got you covered at T&N Creations!

Ghost Explorer - This is truly amazing ladies and I thank you for your time and the T&N Mint tea.  So hypothetically, if I needed to tie the knot, where would I start?

Trinity Rivers - It is as easy as reaching out to us and we will show you all the packages.

Nawty Rivers - And you can make a choice based on your preferences.

As I got on my bike and slowly hovered over the beautifully crafted landscape, I got a full view of where a perfect event can be held.  Kissed by a golden sunset, I smiled at the two ladies waving goodbye to me and disappeared into the clouds towards my next adventure.

GeekSpeak – How did language really start? Join the discussion Sat. Nov 21st at 12pm SLT

What was the origin of our language system?  Did it start with humans or did some animals have a language before us?  Do some animals have a language, or a proto language, now?  Maybe our language started as a sign language, maybe spoken words came later.

Did we once have just one language on Earth?  What made languages grow apart?  Are there some universal words, like ‘ouch’ perhaps, that exist in all languages?

What is the future of language?  Will we eventually have one language over all the Earth, just as we once did when our species began?  Will that language be a spoken, or written, or sign language? Will we forever keep changing our ways to communicate?

Help us to find the answers in GeekSpeak.  Bring all your international and animal friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

TREES FOR THE HOLIDAYS: TEX’S TREE FARM – JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIC) REPORTING.

Sooo..the year 2020 will certainly go down in history as one of the more “dynamic” years we have had in some time.
Many of us look forward to stability and tradition in an unstable World.  One of the more cherished traditions, is to decorate for the Holidays. The sights and sounds of the season abound as the rough edges in life are covered with a lovely blanket of snow.  Usually, folks wait until after Thanksgiving to begin decorating for the holidays, but this year is different.  You can already see decorations springing up all over, not only in Real Life, but in SecondLife as well, as snow-covered Sims begin to carpet the grid.

I had the very real pleasure of visiting Tex’s Tree Farm last week.  Both Tex, and his partner, Summer, were up to their elbows in boxes of Christmas Decoration as they busily decorated their Sim for the holidays.  Despite this activity, they were able to carve out enough time to graciously answer my questions about their operation.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic):    Hi Tex, Hi Summer. Thanks for inviting us back again this Winter to tour your lovely Sim.  You guys always do a great job here, and I am sure that, along with other Christmas Traditions, a visit to Tex’s Tree Farm will soon become an annual trek for many of the grid’s more discerning residents.

So then, what is the “Tex’s Tree Farm” difference that makes your place unique among the hundreds of sims on SL?

Tex Humby:  Tex's Tree Farm is unique because we are the only tree farm that you can chop down your own tree with an axe. We have created in SL a full family experience like you would have in RL cutting down your own Christmas Tree.

JB:  What was your inspiring “Ahh Haaa” moment when you first realized that a “chop down your own Christmas Tree” would become a reality in SL?

TH:  We knew chopping down a tree isn't new in SL with RP Sims. But we never saw anyone cutting down a Christmas Tree; So we put our heads together and found a workable solution so that Real Life experience could be brought to SL, for SL families to be able to have that same Family tradition they experience in RL.

JB:  I see you have a Gift shop here also?  What might the discerning shopper find in there?

TH:  Under the Tree Christmas Shop is an extension to Tex's Tree Farm. We have 100s of Christmas Gacha from the best creators Items such as Rare Christmas Trees, food to toys. Our Gacha Toy section is one the biggest Gacha toy shops in SL. The second floor are non gacha items for your home decor. We also have our Pet adoption center filled with gacha pets waiting to be adopted this yea.  And for all those that love Harry Potter we have a Magical Menagerie with an array of beasts and magical creatures. Careful! Some do bite.

JB:  I think I saw a guy with a streaming hot cup of coffee and a donut.  Where can a chilled tree shopper grab a bite to eat around here?

TH:  Our Deer Ridge Cafe is where you will stop after a long hard day of cutting trees. Stop by our cafe and get a warm cup of Hot Chocolate or cider. We also have several options for meals and soups to get your energy back for more shopping or ice skating.

JB:  How do you two figure out the division of labor here?  Which of you does what, normally?

TH:  Summer and I have been together for 6 years in this game and from that moment we became not only partners but partners in business. We both love creating. My wife Summer builds the trees and I make sure everyone can cut them down and keep the sim running smoothly. We have a great partnership in love and in business that keeps going. Every day is a new adventure in our creativity.

JB:  Do you guys design your own trees?  Or are these obtained elsewhere and brought here?

TH:  We do design our own trees. These trees are all are one of a kind.  Each year we design new ones so there are always several more trees each year for families to come and have new options each year for their family tree.

JB:  Do you operate the tree farm year-round?  Or do you do something else with the property during the off-season?

TH:   We do not. We own several other businesses so half our year is spent with upgrades or building new sims and the other half is getting ready for the Christmas season and the trees. The tree farm ends January 10th every year. That is when we put in our samplings to get ready for the next winter season. All of our other locations on the sim are open year-round.

JB:  I see you also have a lovely residential area here as well?  Can you share something about that with our readers?

TH:  We do own several rental business and Deer Ridge Cabins and Cottages is one that we have set up for that winter season.  Deer Ridge is unique and decorated for that cozy warm winter season. And we do have residents all year as well. Those are always open

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

TH:  Come and see the vast array of trees we have to offer. All our trees have decorating options which allows you to pick and choose which decorations you would like to see on each tree. Stop by the cafe for a hot drink or a hot soup to warm you back up for more shopping at Under the Christmas Tree Shop. There is so much to do and see. Start your families Christmas tradition this year at Tex's Tree Farm. The experience is waiting for you.

There you have it, Folks. The trees for sale at Tex’s Tree Farm are beautiful (especially at midnight) and are very reasonably priced. While not actually built as a “romance sim”, taking that special someone with you to select a tree for your home or business and wander the isles at the gift shop will make for a highly memorable Date Night for you both.  By selecting and cutting down your own Christmas Tree, you can continue a family tradition (or even start a new one), AND, enjoy some shopping therapy in the process.     Accomplish two things with one trip.  Sounds like a Win-Win to me.

Be there!  Aloha

JB

TREASURED FRIENDS AND FEARLESS LOVERS- JOSH (THOMAS1 BELLIS) REPORTING

Just when I think I’ve seen everything here in SecondLife, I find a new sim, so lovingly created that it forces me to recalibrate my ideas on “the art of the possible”. One of those “paradigm busters” is a place called Treasured Friends and Fearless Lovers. There I met Tigress, the owner of the sim, and she graciously agreed to an interview.

Josh (Thomas1 Bellic):  Tigress, thank you for sharing with our readers your thoughts and intentions here.  So, tell me please. What is your overall theme for Treasured Friends?

Tigress (pet karu):   My overall theme is to provide wholesome fun, and entertainment with a chill vibe for the residents of SL.

JB:  Tell us about the Fearless Lovers Session Hall. What will we find there?

TK:  This space was created as a result of hearing so many friends and residence fear, stress, panic as a result of a pandemic.  It offers guided Mindfulness and relaxation meditations, a session we call “Gratitude”; where we spend 20 minutes together sharing the things we are grateful for that day or that week.  To be in “gratitude” is a great way to approach life as it happens.   I try to remain mindful of other’s time and each session is no longer than 20 minutes.

JB:  And what about your Golf Course?  Can people really Golf there?  How does THAT work?

TK:  I love Golf in SL.  And yes, you can really play golf in SL.  You need to rent or purchase the clubs and a HUD.  Then wear/add them.  Select the club you desire to use for the shot, the HUD will put you in the pose to shoot.  You can aim with your walk button (left and right arrows).  Hold down your left mouse button when you are ready … this will power up your shot from least to strong.  When you release the button, your ball will soar with a “swoosh” and you’ll get a marker indicating where your ball landed.  Easy peasy.

JB:  On a grid that has “No Child Avis” posted everywhere you turn; it is refreshing to see a place that is actually “Kid-friendly”.  What made you decide to go in that direction, on a Sim that is rated Moderate.

TK:  My friends cross the full spectrum of SL residents, from BDS&M to G-rated communities.  I feel the children avatars are under-served on the grid.  They are creators, builders, scripters, etc.  They also play golf.  When I created the Nightclub, I wanted kids to have an area where they can frolic, dance, have birthday parties, even hold their own discussion if they so choose.

There is a pool of tears (to remember loved ones), The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Set and another set created by Anna Timmerman (owner of Fapple) of The Little Prince (an original creation just because I loved the book and couldn’t find elements to make it myself.

JB:  Tell us about the Park, complete with trailers and a Rainbow?  What is that all about?

TK:  It actually was the location of Unity Productions’ last performance, “Share some love for the Outsider”.  Through a mistake on my part, I accidentally deleted everything in my Unity folder and then emptied my trash.  I was devastated.  I felt ruined to have eleven years of work just disappear.

When I realized my mistake, I felt like one of my characters.  Useless, stupid and worthless.  I went to the Park and cried.  Then I remembered, here’s my answer.  The Park is a reminder to me that no matter how bad things get, I don’t have to throw in the towel.  I loved the build so much I didn’t have the heart to tear it down.

JB:  At Cuddle Zone 1 & 2, I see someone toppled a lighthouse.  That must have been some wind? What can visitors do there?

TK:  The Cuddle Zone is semi-private space where couples, triples or families can share time chatting and dancing away from the regular Nightclub scene.

The Lighthouse represents my personal spiritual journey.  I am a Christian Pastor.  After I came to SL, I grew to accept all mankind, worship with all mankind and to let “my light” shine for all mankind.  The light doesn’t just belong in the lighthouse to direct ships to safety.  The light (my heart, compassion, love, peace) belongs in the darkness as a beacon of hope for the hopeless, peace to the confused and shattered mind, comfort for those in the grip of sorrow.

JB:  I see some of your rowdier guests left their campsite a complete mess to the eyes, but a feast for the ants.  What happened there?

TK:  I just love to add a touch of clutter to a serene scene.  The table has awesome poses and reminds me of parties I attended while in college.  Thanks to Death Row Dawgs for the laughter you give me.

JB:  I see you have a lovely Clubhouse, complete with a Night Club, and a 5-star Restaurant.  Looks like a great place to bring that special date?

TK:  THAT is my heart’s desire… that the club will not be used for your favorite DJ and host.  But that it instead will have a 24/7 stream of romantic music, with nooks and crannies for that special someone to share dinner, close talk and maybe after a dance or two, pop the question!

Once a month, I will hire a live singer or two for a special night for the Fearless Lovers group and their guests.  I’m excited about it’s potential.  It’s nice to be in the middle of a crowd, but sometimes you just want some place that is intimate and not laggy.

JB:   Tigress,  I understand this is not your first foray into Sim development. You have some experience with the Theater?

TK:  Yes, I was the Founder, Director, Producer and principal Choreographer of Unity Productions - a theater house in SL for eleven years.  We would film our shows and I would show the movie in a RL movie cinema in RL.  It was a wonder journey for myself and the cast.

JB:  You have some other interests here in SL, right?  What is your Relationships Group all about?

TK:  Yes, I facilitate the Relationship Discussion Group in SL and beyond at Inspiration Island on Wednesdays at Noon SLT.  Here we not only talk about romantic relationships, but also about family, friends, even career - any and every which way relationships are formed and broken and what to do after a break-up.

JB:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

TK:  Just this… after I shed this mortal body let me be remembered as a lover.  Not the warm fuzzy or romantic kind only… but forgoing the distance with a friend or stranger in need.  I’ll borrow a quote from Rumi, “A lover knows only humility, he (she) has not choice”.  We were created by LOVE, with LOVE, for LOVE, to give LOVE and receive LOVE without FEAR!

So there you have it, Folks.  Take that special someone by the hand and head on over to Treasured Friends and Fearless Lovers.  You’ll be glad you did.

Be There.  Aloha! - JB
