Newbies invade Second Life © – Stareyes Galaxy Reporting ...

Do you remember the day you first rezzed in in Second Life ©, entering a madhouse chat area full of avatars, all in varied stages of confusion? Do you remember how difficult it was to get started, and once you did, how humiliating it was to realize that regardless of how you had learned to use the interface and to interact with avatars, you still were a newbie? While the entrance into Second Life for newbie avatars has improved, they still face similar challenges as we more established residents did back in the day. I went out to prey on unsuspecting newbies to get their first impressions on Second Life.

User statistics [1] show that signups for new avatars exceed 10 000 daily. Where there are about 30 000 to 60 000 users online at any given time, these statistics mean that a significant portion of avatars online are less than a day old. As to what purposes these avatars are created, one can only surmise the reasons. However, in info hubs there seems to be a constant flux of migrants, some new to the online virtual world experience, some transferring from other platforms such as IMVU.

Newbie avatars, in any case, face a culture shock entering Second Life. I had the opportunity to stalk new avatars in the hope of pinning them down for an interview. This was not an easy task, as you will soon see!

Why do avatars lie? Glossom Resident Reporting…

Subject of many studies, lying on the Internet is a sensitive topic with many dark contours.  Today we will restrict this subject to our virtual home, Second Life. On a platform for socialization, written words have a paramount importance as they translate facial expressions and carry a strong emotional charge. They are the eyes that cannot be seen and the voice that cannot be heard. Therefore, the same word can have different connotations when addressed to different targets.  Although the lie is not a colorful word, it is necessary to take the context into account by going deeper into this subject and ask ourselves why we are in Second Life and how we use this platform.

It’s time to Relay! CELEBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK

After four months of fundraising, Second Life Relayers will be gathering on July 13-14 for the ninth annual Relay For Life of Second Life 24 hour event to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK.  The Relay track will stretch across 34 of 40 Relay sims and will bring together thousands of volunteers and team members who have so far raised an amazing US$300,000 in the 2013 fundraising season and who will be walking the track together in their quest to see an end to cancer.

Stingray9798 Raymaker ( Jeff Montegut, the American Cancer Society’s staff partner to SLs Relay) said: “Thanks to the tremendous support of our volunteers, teams, committee members, and corporate partners, we have raised an astonishing amount of money and are getting so close to an all-time total of 2 million dollars raised in Second Life.  This important contribution is money that funds the mission of the American Cancer Society – research, education, and prevention.  I’m looking forward to personally thanking everyone at this years event!’

Culture: Adventures of Snake Part II - CCoursey reporting ….

So it was Snake who introduced me to basic SL and that’s where our adventures together began…. (Excerpt from Part 1) – Snake you will recall came to my rescue and helped me understand some of the basic ins and outs of operating in SL.

Snake and his partner “Amy” introduced me into the world of Vampires and this is where my adventures with Snake continue.

As I understand it, a vampire clan is usually run by a queen…  I shall call this one Ophelia.  As intimidating as her title, Ophelia nevertheless was nice, beautiful, and came across as a very sensual person.  When in her company though,  I chose to keep my mouth shut, because one moment she seemed friendly, but in the next she was complaining about some aspect of the clan.

Life of a Second Life© DJ; DJ Rhage Firehawk- Nomad Aries Reporting…

I am a music freak and travel from club to club to hear what is being played.

There are a lot of fantastic DJjs in Second Life©, it is literally a gold mine for music lovers.

Sometimes when you are not expecting it, you hear a DJ play and you have to go hear more.  That is how I met DJ Rhage Firehawk.  I wasn't in a club; I was working at home listening to a club stream when I became distracted by the music. I had to stop what I was working on and listen. Listen was all I could do.  I ventured into the club to tip the DJ for an awesome set of music and ended up staying for the rest of the party.  I just didn't want to leave; it was one great tune after another, smoothly spun by DJ Rhage Firehawk.

I have caught up to DJ Rhage a few times since and his sets are always something different and surprising.  He is a very friendly and open person who just loves music.
Rhage has been DJing for a long time both in real life (for his own personal enjoyment) and on Second Life.  He is always working on and experimenting with his music.

We had an interesting conversation and it turned into an interview, so here then, with the permission of DJ Rhage, is my interview with him.

The Ebb and Flow of Second Life - Lacy Muircastle reporting ....

As the dust settles on SLB 10, I thought I would reflect on what has been an outstanding week of celebration and which has highlighted the fact that Second Life is in pretty good shape despite what the naysayers have had to say.

The exhibits on display were phenomenal, and the amount of time and effort put into the multitude of stands was clear for all to see.  Granted there was drama around some of the exhibits, particularly the one by Bryn Oh - but hey this is SL and there is always a bit of drama going on somewhere.  Nevertheless the creativity and enthusiasm of some of our fellow residents is truly mind boggling and quite honestly you should never be able to say you are bored in SL , as the opportunities for things to do seem endless.

The Master Entertains: Spotlight On RichyRich, Owner of Caged BDSM Gaming-Mackenzie Abbot Reporting…

BSDM has a dark and mysterious side that few people know or understand.  It's more than just spankings and other activities that people would class as "kinky".

How do you combine BDSM with gaming and DJ events in Second Life©?
Richy Rich is a dom (dominant) and has managed to do just that.  As the owner of Caged BDSM Gaming, he seems to have found the right balance.  We meet at the venue and, as expected, he has two of his subs (submissive) by his side.  The place has a few VIP's milling around and playing the various machines but he greets me warmly and I begin asking him about his roots.

Second Life’s Bikers are ready to ride out. Tea Couturier reporting….

When you think of Regent Estates you think of a place where you can go and purchase a bit of paradise to call home. Regent Estates is one of the oldest and most dependable estates in Second Life. Regent Estates keeps on growing and it has been in business since 2006.

However, there is more to Regents Estates than you may think. Regents Estates have a large biking community and sim, which enables motor bike owners to drive freely on the open roads of the sim in peace and to also meet up with other members and hang out with them. The owners of this enterprise are husband and wife team, Melody Regent and Motor Loon. I popped down to the sim and visited Melody and Motor to find out how the idea and passion for bikes turned it into what it is today, a thriving Second Life business and family.

MusiqArts Magazine News: :Luver's Island Has Everything a Music Venue Needs

Luver's Island has good quality music, great scenery, excellent dance balls and plenty of space to park your avatar while enjoying the entertainment it offers both on and off the grid.

Since October 2012, Luver’s Island, owned by Anastasia Glenwalker, has been run by Jolly Leborski and DeusRulez Shamrock. It has been serving live music from the beginning, holding a number of grid-wide live shows featuring many famous artists.

"Luver’s Island is a virtual establishment that avails its virtual musical & social spots located in Second Life for all the music lovers to enjoy.”

Second Life’s Well Known Jazz and Blues Singer Jackie Lefko- Tea Couturier Reporting…

Jackie Lefko grew up in Brooklyn, NY.  She was the middle child of 5 offspring to her parents.  She spent a lot of time with her grandmother including attending church.

Jackie really did not experience anything out of the ordinary during her childhood. As she got older she enjoyed singing and people around her noticed that she possessed the skills to be a talented singer. With dedication and hard work Jackie Lefko became the singer we love to listen in Second life.
Jackie has been very busy performing in Second life but was kind enough to spare some time with me to sit down and chat about her life in Second Life and also an in-depth look into her real life which she makes no secret about. As we sat down with a cup of coffee I could tell this was going to be a fascinating chat.

Dramedy: Like a Shadow in the Night- The Black Crow....

Like a shadow in the night…
Like a fly on the wall…
Like a hair in your soup…
I will see and hear everything you do, but you will not see me. I am…The Black Crow.

So it begins…my destiny as an SL douche fighter. I awoke to a new day. Scratch that, a new beginning. I put on my outfit, laced up my boots, and hid away my identity under the guise of a masked vigilante. I stepped in front of the mirror to give one good look at Second Life’s new hope for peace, and I have to admit…I look pretty good.

I took to the streets, fully determined to scour the vast, endless world of Second Life to find the scumbags that try to make this place a misery for us all. What I didn’t expect was to stumble upon such a disgusting example so soon.

Business in Second Life : Do's and Don’ts in Virtual Business - Orchids Zenovka Reporting…

Be it real life or Second Life, the trick behind success in business is having a business, and then, more business. The word “Business” has come to mean “enterprise” or “trade”.

Second Life© (SL) is a great platform for a variety of business ventures. Like it may be portrayed by those that never explored what Second Life has to offer, it is not a simple MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games), but a different kettle of fish because there is no goal to be obtained. It’s a “user-created” “virtual life”.

You can trade real estate, design clothing, jewelry and accessories, manage events, create avatar shapes and skins, photography, be a breedable pet manufacturer, a graphic artist, a scripter, own a club and so much more. What drives entrepreneurship in SL is that you can retain the copyright for your in-world creations.
When you create amazing work and want to share it with other, you can with a bit of compensation for your efforts. All you need to have is an establishment where your work can be made available. People also have to know that you have a product that is worth their while.  Once you have your creations, establishment and marketing plan in place, your business in second life should takes off.
The dream of “Making a Living Virtually” is very much possible with a little elbow grease and a few business tactics to get the word around. Take a look at a light-hearted yet honest round-up of 30(one for each day of your month) Do’s and Don’ts in the realm of business with emphasis on Second Life virtual business that will get you on your way to success.

The Black Crow is Watching! - A New Dramedy Section Coming to The SL Enquirer- Lanai Jarrico Reporting...

Second Life© may seem like “just a game” to some, but to many others it is more than a pastime.

It becomes an extension of people’s lives once they meet friends and get involved in the various activities that supply them and others with entertainment and even a supplemental income. The virtual world can be very unpredictable in a sense business and people come and go. It can also be a buffet of downright incompetent residents who haven’t the slightest clue how to make friends and be part of a peaceful and productive environment. Recently The SL Enquirer went on an undercover mission to observe some of the hangouts across the grid and was amazed to see just how differently people act when they don’t think anyone with the ability to share these stories with the masses, is watching how they really act.

SLE Guide to the top Recreational Water Sports Sites – Glossom Resident Reporting…

After a long Winter and rainy Spring, we all feel like going out on the streets as soon as the first rays of sunshine appear while craving for those long hot summer days. As temperatures soar there is nothing better than being surrounded by the refreshing sea water. Therefore, it’s time to say goodbye to the couch and start taking advantage of the energizing sun and of Second life’s excellent conditions for the practice of Water Sports.

Before bathing season started the SLE has sent its team of experts into the field to examine the water quality and beaches conditions and facilities. What comes next is the result of that thorough examination.

Here you will find some information on the various Water Sports available on four outstanding regions awarded with the SLE's blue flag.

Spotlight on Drama Libre- Vapor Paragon Reporting…

Cirque du Soleil
If you have been in Second Life© for some time, you may have visited many places with theme parties, but Drama Libre stands out from all of them. Drama Libre is like no other, with the kind of effort they put in their theme parties.  Every week they host a big party with a new theme that attracting big crowds. They have been doing this nonstop since 2006.  The most amazing fact is, that they have not repeated any theme yet. Drama Libre has a dedicated team of builders, who are not only very imaginative but are also very professional. This venue is completely rebuilt from scratch every week to match their new theme, each time with great detail.

By looking at their work you can certainly tell they don't compromise on quality and put  great effort into what they do. Drama libre's innovative theme ideas always seem to give new challenge to builder team, but they always do justice with it. At each party, Djs play music matching the theme as well. They specially lineup songs and even classic commercials audio clips to enhance the feel and its fun factor.

Djs also cater requests from guests and play dedications. At each party, Drama Libre attracts a big crowd, which includes many new and regular visitors who dress according to themes. Some of them are so dedicated that they design their own costumes for each theme.

There are also contests for best in theme, through which one can win a generous amount of lindens. Drama Libre's name describes their philosophy. Libre is a Spanish word which means "free", so "Drama Free". Drama Libre is an oasis for people who want to have fun and enjoy a variety of music in a drama free environment.

I talked to founder/Co-owner Peachy Sassoon and also other Drama Libre team members to learn more about this fascinating club.

Bending the Boundaries of Gender in Second Life © – Stareyes Galaxy Reporting...

Second Life © has proven to be a powerful platform for people who wish to explore life on the other side of the gender spectrum, as for instance transgendered avatars. For many, play-pretending to be the opposite sex is just a trifle, for others it can be an insult to all avatarkind. It is a common complaint among male avatars that they fear being preyed upon by other males in female avatar form, and many female avatars can attest to the begging of men to “go voice” as it seems to be a common perception that any female avatar could be a G.I.R.L. (“guy in real life”). Stareyes Galaxy went out to interview some avatars who came forward as cross-gender experimenters.

“Jane Doe” does not wish to volunteer her real avatar name. She states good reasons for this: “I have found that not only will people help me more readily when I ask them as a girl, but that they also better accept being helped by a female avatar,” she says. As a real-life male, she has worked as a consultant and helped corporate avatars get up to speed when first entering Second Life. “I once was specifically asked to appear as my female self in a strategy seminar,” Jane continues. “Using local chat, I helped people teleport to the location, find their seats, get started on instant messaging, and so on. I even ran treasure hunts with the goal of getting the newbie avatars acquainted with navigation, object manipulation, and camera control. In the [strategy] group discussion, using voice, it was interesting to hear the reaction toward my robust male voice. I think it opened the eyes of many with regard to the range of possibilities of Second Life.” Another use for going female for Jane has been seeing how other males behave in social situations. ”There is a lot to learn about both honesty and deceit,” she concludes.

“John Doe” heard that I was working on this article and wanted to tell his views on the subject, having experimented on sexual relations as a female alt.

Digital Rabbit Hole-“Window On A Train” ~ Our Entry For The UWA Vl Machinima Challenge 2013 ~

We needed a train!
Not just any old train, but a 1970′s Diesel Train, detailed and very real looking inside and out. Nat and I scoured every train-store, Marketplace train offering in SL, and could not find what we wanted. One of the reasons I think our production took as long as it did (close to 5 months) was finding that illusive train. So being hopeful, even while we were being  disappointed, “I heard so and so made a train for so and so” and finding all leads running into dead ends, we decided to build a track and maybe..”The train would come.”

Total Anarchy Across Second Life-Orchids Zenovka Reporting...

The word "Anarchy" comes from the ancient Greek anarchia, meaning "absence of a leader", "without rulers". There is anarchy now in second life and it comes in the form of  Total Anarchy with its *disclaimer*

Total Anarchy is not your mamma's discount room.  We here @ Total Anarchy can-not wait to create chaos across SL.  Total Anarchy is a discount room you've never seen before.  It is DEFINITELY not for the weak @ heart.  If you tend to get butt hurt this isn't for you.  We are direct, truthful and completely non-politically correct.   You have been WARNED!  We will be bringing you the darker side of SL.  Things for: Goth, Cyberpunk, Tank Girl, Comic, Punk, Werewolf, Vampire, Alternative, Metal, Rockstar, & Biker. Anything chaotic.”

The creations promise to be interesting and are a brainchild of a mix of Julya Lykin, who is the outgoing “tomboy, sexpot with a dash of gothic” and Pixy Snook who is the 'bubble Goth cosmo freak'. It is rare to find a combination like that so varied and yet “twin –like” as Julya says so herself. The website is worth checking out and created with a lot of innovative thought and dark humor. I had a chance to find out more before it opens including the Flickr contest and take a sneak-peek at the discount room with a difference. Take it with a pinch of humour and unleash your rebelliously humourous side because that’s what it takes to fit into “total anarchy”.

Come to the dark side. We have cookies …..

Second Life © Celebrates 10 Years of Creativity –Gates open June 16th!- Stareyes Galaxy Reporting…

Stareyes riding the pod

The summer of 2013 will be remembered as the 10th anniversary of Second Life ©. The SL 10 B Community Celebration has been working discreetly behind the scenes to bring you the most astounding 22-sim fairground bursting with the creativity of avatars. Stareyes Galaxy had the privilege to preview the fairgrounds and talk with some of the personnel and exhibitors on the eve of the opening.

Arriving at the welcome area, I was expectant but also a bit hesitant, having already heard of the numerous exhibits to be seen at the SL 10 B CC fairgrounds. As I walked over to the nearest pod ride station, I quickly realized how little imagination I had had, as the sights started to unravel all around me. The pod rides are divided to the East and the West Exhibit tracks, and taking the ride, the visitor gets information on the exhibits located adjacent to the track. There is a HUD to control the speed of the pod, and you can get off anywhere you wish.

The sheer number of exhibits left me breathless, and soon I was experiencing “fairground frenzy”, only missing a stick of candy floss to tangle my hair in. The exhibits range from commercial to the artful, showing all aspects of SL creativity. Ethnic groups, charities, entertainment - all are represented for a good day’s family fun. The sims are “G”-rated, so I do advise discretion.

Yavanna Llanfair

I talked with the creator of the pods, Yavanna Llanfair, who said she does these as a service to the SL 10 B celebration. Her exhibit tells about the history of the pods, how they came about, and the basic principles of how they work. “This is the third SL  B I have run the pods. It’s a big responsibility, but I love that sort of responsibility – something I have to get right,” she told me at her exhibit. She doesn’t sell the pods that also run routes on mainland, but she does sell the scripts to make the pods run.

Interview with Yavanna Llanfair

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

June 16, 2013

In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s day an official holiday in the United States. It was only right to give dad his day since Mother’s Day had been around since 1908.
This holiday is a celebrated to honor fatherhood on the third Sunday in June.  Other countries around the world have also taken on this holiday too but the dates vary. For example, In Italy, Belgium and Bolivia, Father’s day is celebrated on March 19th. In Romania it is observed on the second Sunday of May. In South Korea, both parents are celebrated with Parent’s Day on May 8th

In Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, this day is celebrated June 21; the first day of Summer.

No matter where we are in the world and on what day, celebrating fathers has become a worldwide tradition. Without a Father, there would be no us, unless we are a miracle child created through Immaculate Conception.  Father’s aren’t only those that contributed to your creation, they don’t have to have a genetic connection to be considered a father, he can be the one that stepped up to the plate and took on the role of helping raise and mold you into the person you are today. So, whoever it is you consider to be dad, be sure to let him know how much you love and appreciate all he has done for you, maybe even apologize for all the headaches you gave him as you were growing up. The most important reason for this special day, is letting him know you care, not just on this day, but every day.

I'm a daddy's girl and ain't ashamed to say it proudly. One of the big questions for Father’s day is what do I get Dad? I usually come up with something good....I think.
