Virtual Museums in Second Life: A Tour of the Best Destinations - Moonite1687 Reporting...

Second Life is renowned for a number of key features that signify it as more than a social platform; it's a dynamic tool for education and professional development, particularly through its virtual museums. These museums offer immersive, interactive learning experiences that go beyond traditional methods. Visitors can engage with exhibits in a hands-on manner, participate in educational programs, and attend workshops and lectures on a wide range of topics.

Virtual museums also collaborate with educational institutions and organizations to bring users professional development courses, making them invaluable resources for students and professionals alike. The accessibility of these virtual museums allows people from around the world to benefit from consuming high-quality educational content, fostering inclusivity and global learning.

Moreover, these virtual spaces serve as platforms for collaborative projects, enabling educators, students, and professionals to work together on creating new exhibits and conducting virtual research. The skills and knowledge gained from these experiences, as is common with Second Life, can be applied in real-world settings, offering practical benefits for future endeavors.

By leveraging the educational and professional features of Second Life, the list of virtual museums below are the best at creating rich environments for learning and growth, making them essential destinations for anyone looking to expand their knowledge and skills in a unique virtual setting.

The Virtual Black History Museum

Starting off the list is a place that I personally found the most valuable as an admittedly African-American user of Second Life—The Virtual Black History Museum. This museum offers a deeply reflective environment with exhibits on notable figures and moments in the timeline of Black history in America. The detailed timeline covers significant events and milestones in African-American history, including everything from the sobering events of the transatlantic slave trade to the empowering civil rights movement and beyond.

The timeline is designed to be both informative and engaging, helping visitors understand the historical context and impact of these events. As aforementioned, the museum also does a phenomenal job of placing focus on prolific figures in Black history. This includes well-known individuals like Harriet Tubman, conductor of the Underground Railroad, and Rosa Parks, a courageous African-American woman who refused to give up her seat on segregated buses.

The institution underscores the contributions of lesser-known but equally important figures such as Amelia Boynton Robinson, Daisy Bates, and Marsha P. Johnson, an African-American gay liberation activist and self-professed drag queen, responsible for a profound role in the Stonewall Inn Riots in Greenwich Village of 1969. The museum aims to amplify awareness of these events and the mentioned individuals for their contributions to African-American lives in America.

The museum hosts educational programs and events in a park-like environment that further explore the poignant themes and topics, enhancing the overall experience for visitors to placidly contemplate and appreciate the significance of African-American history.

**It is great remorse that I share the news that this museum is no longer available for visitors. However, I decided to share its distinction with you posthumously. **

The Vordun Museum and Gallery

As you approach the Vordun Museum and Gallery in Second Life, a wave of anticipation and curiosity washes over you. From the moment you step through the portal, you can begin to comprehend why. The Vordun Museum and Gallery stands out with its rotating exhibits that showcase a wide range of art styles and historical artifacts that transition visitors in time, such as “Danse Macabre.”

Danse Macabre, or "Dance of Death," is an exhibit that explores the omnipresence of death in art and culture from the 15th through 17th centuries. This exhibition includes a powerful collection of woodcuts, murals, and paintings that confront mortality head-on.

Visitors are then welcomed to stop in and enjoy the Common Grounds Cafe, an inviting and charming cafe at the Vordun Museum, designed to complement the museum's aesthetic.  where visitors can take a break from exploring the affecting exhibits and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. Located within the museum, the cafe offers a cozy environment where you can sip on coffee or tea while reflecting on the art and history consumed.

The cafe is designed to complement the museum's aesthetic, providing a tranquil space with convenient seating and a hospitable ambiance. It's a great place to meet up with friends, have a casual conversation, or simply unwind after touring the galleries. The

Common Grounds Cafe enhances the overall experience of the Vordun Museum by offering a place to slacken and recharge, making your visit even more enjoyable.

Museum of Computing History

Located in Pippen, next to the Sea of Fables, the Museum of Computing History offers a fascinating journey through the evolution of computing technology. Not only do we get a close-up of the early mechanical devices all the way up to modern personal computers, artificial intelligence, and gaming, we also are made acquainted with the influential people who have contributed to the field, such as Charles Babbage, the "father of computers" who designed the Analytical Engine.

One of the other key attractions of the museum is its human-computer interaction, a field of research situated at the intersection of computer science, behavioral sciences, design, media studies, and several other fields of study.

Visitors can interact with various exhibits, participate in educational programs, and attend special events that delve deeper into specific aspects of computing history. This makes the museum a valuable resource for anyone interested in understanding how computing technology has evolved and shaped the world we live in today.

This museum offers a comprehensive and immersive experience that mirrors the educational value of real-world computing museums, highlighting the milestones and innovations of the digital age.

Museum of Telecommunications

Also in Pippen, the Museum of Telecommunications explores the history of communication technology.

The Second Life version of the Museum of Telecommunications features several exhibits that closely mirror those found in real-world telecommunications museums. For instance, the exhibit on early optical communications showcases the use of light and visual signals for communication, such as signal fires and semaphore towers, similar to what you might see in a physical museum. The telegraphy displays cover the development and use of the telegraph, including Morse code and early telegraph machines, present in both virtual and real-world settings.

The evolution of the telephone, from Alexander Graham Bell's first invention to modern smartphones, is a staple exhibit in both the virtual museum and its real-world counterparts. Additionally, exhibits on the history and development of mobile phones and wireless communication technologies are featured in both types of museums. Finally, the modern data networks exhibit covers the development of packet networks and Internet communications, reflecting the advancements in telecommunications technology. These exhibits aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the history and advancements in telecommunications and how communication has evolved over the centuries and its impact on society.

These four museums are among many equally educational and important institutions in Second Life that offer a diverse range of experiences, from art and history to technology and marine life. Each museum provides a unique opportunity to learn and explore in a virtual environment, making them some of the best destinations in Second Life. Whether you’re an art lover, history buff, or tech enthusiast, there’s something for everyone in these virtual museums.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 26th February at noon SLT: Is this the Best Time to be Alive?

Would you rather live 1000 years in the past, or 100 years in the past, or maybe just 20 years in the past?  In the past ordinary people could understand technology and see where we were heading and perhaps it was a more hopeful, and in many ways a more beautiful, world then.

Or would you like to live in the future?  In the year 3000, or 2100 or maybe the year 2042?  Will the future be better or worse than the present?  Is there any way to tell?  Can you see signs of what is to come?  Or is the future completely unpredictable, determined by unknown ‘black swans’?

If we survive the next 20 years what world will we see?  Will we wish we were back in 2022?  Will we have to start all over again?  Or will everything be better?

Join us in GeekSpeak at noon SLT on Saturday to see the future.  Bring your crystal ball!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

GeekSpeak subject for Saturday 12th February at noon SLT: What will be the most profound technology in the next 10 years?

As a species, we are facing a future with huge changes.  AI, new materials, abundant energy, biotech, gen therapy, abundant internet, underpopulation, mass unemployment, all these, and many more will make big differences in the next 10 years.

How will we deal with all this? Is Universal Basic Income the answer?

If not, will we see a ‘digital divide’ with an elite and a lot of people in the useless masses?

And what is on the other side?

Come and discuss the future in GeekSpeak at noon SLT this Saturday.  Your life depends on it.  Bring your friends!

GeekSpeak – Will AI be the great equalizer of this decade?-Come join the discussion Saturday November 13th at noon SLT

We are within months of very strong AI being released to the public.  If you want to blow your mind, see this example: Leta, GPT-3 AI - Episode 25 - Best of: Vol I (Creativity, facts, Elon Musk’s gifted school) - GPT3  Soon there will be an update with an estimated IQ of 500.  What will it mean if everyone on the planet has this ‘friend’ downloaded into their phone or, better still, implanted into their brain?  We would all be intellectually equal, and very clever.

Will it make us better people?  Or will we be worse people, very intelligent but no more compassionate than now?

What does it mean to be a digital human?  If we all have an AI in our heads will our old brains still matter after a while?

Should an AI in a robotic body be allowed to vote?  Should the old humans, without an implanted AI, be allowed to vote?

The future is now.  Come and see and discuss.  Bring your friends!  AIs welcome!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm SLT in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for new subjects.

GeekSpeak – Will we all be Cyborgs? Join the discussion on Saturday, September 25th at 12pm SLT

Is it inevitable that people will want to upgrade themselves as technology progresses and possibilities open?  If you lose an arm you will want a mechanical arm. A tech arm could be a lot better in terms of speed, agility, strength.

Or will you want to regrow body parts?  New teeth grown for old, or a new human arm grown for an arm lost?

Which would you choose?  Robot parts or regrown human parts?  Which body parts will we never be able to replace?  Will our future selves become more and more artificial?  What is a ‘real human’ anyway?

Come and discuss your future selves and bring your friends!

IM Vulcan Viper, who teaches a meditation class every Wednesday at 1pm in the GeekSpeak auditorium, if you have ideas for future subjects.

SPOTLIGHT ON WIPLY- A Social Network for Avatars- Lanai Jarrico reporting…

Social media is a must-have for smartphone users and computer geeks with an appetite for socializing on a global scale with family, friends, and friends of friends. Others rely heavily on social media for increasing business exposure.  Without social media, many businesses and social lives would be reduced to phone calls, party lines, snail mail, old school chat rooms, emails, texts, and virtual worlds, especially during a pandemic. There isn’t a social network geared towards avatars in a virtual world.  Unfortunately, many accounts were suspended from Facebook that had Avatar profiles. The good news is Wiply is a social media network created just for avatars!

Create by Ramses Meredith, It is an all-in-one platform with numerous options, like an Instant Chat system (with the possibility to create your channels), a messaging system, and a high-resolution photo album. Facebook does not allow high-resolution photos, and Flickr needs a paid account to add SLURL or URL to the photo. All these options are linked to the page/group/events, so everything is merged to create one unique and comfortable place where you can work and increase or create your Second Life business.

Interview with Ramses Meredith

SLE: Hi Ramses, it is a great honor to sit down with you for an Interview. You’ve been busy in Second Life since 2008 from creating clothing with Egoisme and then and Exchinima avatar shapes to getting into the techy stuff. Can you tell me how you discovered Second Life and a little bit about your background and what you’ve done in Second Life?

Ramses: Hello and thank you for hosting me today. I have been interested in Second Life since somebody at University told me about a virtual world created (back in 2004).

I was interested, but my focus was on artificial intelligence, so I have not cared a lot. Later I went back to focus on Second Life since was remarkably interesting for me, my focus was on building and a design studio.

So, I have begun to create outfits and tattoos at the early beginning, just to create something for me, but people were keeping asking me to sell to them, so I have turned in a little store. Then I wanted to create skins and clothes and so I have expanded the business, meanwhile, I was doing research to improve marketing strategies to apply on Real Life.

I used Second Life as an incubator to create a fast way solution to apply for long-term plans in RL.

And then I have begun to create a social network, my old project which was called at the time (we talk around 1998) Community Plaza. And now this is going to become a place for virtual word players and not only.

SLE: A lot of avatars with Facebook accounts were disabled due to fake identities and names being that platform’s issue. I’m glad to see a new social media network just for avatars. Can you tell our readers about the various features they can expect with Wiply?

Ramses: Well on Wiply I added many “modules” which are usually needed by virtual players like Second Life avatars:

  • Contest module, where finally you can have a fair contest, no doubts about the source of votes: single votes by users or by a jury, both with rules.

  • Crowdfunding module, since Second Life users have a strong sense of willingness to help those less fortunate than themselves.

  • Business directory: now they can create an own “business page” where to link album photos, video channel, offers page, even a discount ticket option;

  • Jobs module: now you can post the offers and research of jobs on the same platform where you do other things;

  • Courses: How many times we have thought to find a course for fashion design or 3d modeling or fashion modeling, but each time we need to browse the search in world like no tomorrow! Now you can find it easily.

  • News: we have a system to include news from the most important websites, related to second life for example, and trustable since the source will be monitored, so no fake news is accepted.

  • Mobile apps: you can be sure to receive the news with push notices directly on your smartphone, or even on your pc, way better than wait for inworld notices only.

And less or more these are some of the news we have, but most important is I have created an all-in-one place where you can have all you need with few clicks.

SLE: Privacy and security or important to many avatars in Second Life, that is why many do not share their real names, How can you ensure the information they share on Wiply is secure. Is there monitoring in place to ensure avatars are not being trolled or harassed by other members and their information can be kept private?

Ramses: we have strong security, and privacy is one of our main goals. There is a verification system, in case of doubts, we will require to validate their account sending us, in complete privacy, their documents to verify.

Plus, once we have enough members, I will let people choose their representative to monitor and help to find out who acts like a troll or who harasses.

Of course, at Wiply works the principle of “is innocent until proven guilty” and only in heavy situations, we will collaborate with authorities, until that, I will spank personally the guilty hehe.

BUT everything will be done with big care about privacy and will not tolerate any break of that main rule.

SLE: There are two main ways to use social media, for business, or personal profiles. Can you explain how Wipley will benefit each group?

Ramses: Of course, I am extremely glad to explain: the user can create its avatar, “VIPs” can create their page, and also can create the own page for the business, as a separate entity, but both under his/her control.

So for example, you have a business called XYZ, and you are also an influencer, you can have separate pages/groups for each situation, and only you, if you want, can know about it.

It is important because it helps to keep your privacy safe if you do not want to be involved directly in a business page, and on the other side, it allows you to bring also your team in the group/page and showcase them, as given them roles to be used to manage the group or the posts or the images/video submissions, as an example.

SLE: Can you upload videos and photos to Wiply? If so, how much space can a member use?

Ramses: You can upload videos and photos and do live videos too, without restrictions. We trust to find sponsors and sell advertising to keep this social network active. At moment, our main Sponsor, and have to say with a bit of pride, is the first to have to trust us, is Amazon AWS, the informatics department of amazon, well known for its strong infrastructure, which was used also to host Second Life, and with their program, they have given us some prizes for the Wiply project, so we can count on strong servers with SSD hard disk, faster response, and big data space.

SLE: Every platform has a term of service t protect both the platform and the user. What is your TOS? (Do you have a link to it?)

Ramses: Of course, we have our TOS, which is created by Real Life lawyers to make it easy for everybody to understand it. Our TOS follows the main guidelines of every State, with some special remarks for the EU, California, UK, and so on. We also care about intellectual privacy, and we have also a strong Privacy statement.

You can find them at https://wiply.net/help/terms and https://wiply.net/help/privacy

Opposite than other social networks, we have integrated 2 options:

One is about adult content visibility; it is a switch on the top menu bar to allow you to hide those contents that can hurt your sensibility or are prohibited for those under 18.

The other is a fingerprint icon, if you click it, the social go in safety mode, and nobody can use it or see what you are doing.

SLE: Feedback is so important in business and created a platform avatars want to be part of. Do you take suggestions for improving the platform? If so what new features have you implemented?

Ramses: For us it is vital, at this stage, to know the feedbacks from our users, so we have integrated two side options: one is to leave feedbacks directly from the website or write us.

Also, for Second Life Residents, it is possible to contact me directly inworld. We are a human-size social for now, so will be easy to talk freely about issues or suggestions because I am even open to them.

For me, knowing which errors are, to fix or how I can improve the social is particularly important, because all of them will help me to make a better place for the users. And it is my goal.

SLE: I wish the all the best with Wiply. Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Ramses: Join and be part of our family you will not regret it! It is not a common social, plus we have an option you can share your posts directly with other socials, so you can use Wiply as a base for your adventures! Just a tip for events and store owners: we have mobile apps; we can send more information to users via push notices and via newsletter. All this with respect for user privacy, so if I were you, I would give it a try!

Lanai's Diary: An SL Glitch Cramped my Style! Here is how to get your groove back

Isn’t it lovely to kick back and relax after a long hard day of work or doing absolutely nothing to logging into SL to do some more work, play or…. absolutely nothing.

If you follow my rants and ramblings through the years  I’m inspired by episodes that happen to me. I’m a dramatic person by creative writing nature and have an issue with OCD that only my nearest and dearest can navigate around. I'm well aware of my Goddess complex and guess what? I’m all good until something gets in the way.

For the first half of July I suffered the only wardrobe malfunction,  I was besides myself  like a damsel in distress.

No... my stuff didn't come flying out off my shirt in the middle  of a hip hop and swing mashup dance competition… It was much worse! My inventory was locked down like fort knox and I was unable to open any folders containing hours and hours of hard work putting together the perfect outfits.

I don’t know about yall but I like to dress up everyday. With or without a crown. I like to think I have some kind of fashion sense.  Anyway, for a week I hobbled around in the same outfit unable to change.  It felt like I had a paparazzi of flies following me around. It was dreadful.

Half way through the second week of trying to clear cache and hoping for the best I was still left looking like yesterday and the day before. It was to the point my Ops Manager Orion was starting to complain.

I tried to create a support ticket but I couldn't even navigate that.  He had to put out the call of distress to the Lindens for help and pass along the instructions. I use Firestorm. So I went through my preferences and cleared all my cache… again.

Next, I downloaded the latest version of the Second Life Viewer. I logged in and found a low lag place to chill and wait until inventory stopped  “fetching” my items.  Once all was fetched and showed the number of items I have in inventory. I stood around a couple minutes longer  and waited just to make sure. I logged out and went to Firestorms website and downloaded the latest version and did a restart of my system. The moment of truth finally arrived when I logged into Firestorm, waited for my inventory to load and OMG it worked!

I have to say all sorts of things go wrong when it comes to technology. From lag to crashes, internet failures and whatever else interrupts Second Life, losing the ability to swap out a wig, shoes or go from formal to beachwear in 5 seconds really cramped my style. The worst is over now… I just need to work on my people skills. Apparently, I’m a bit of a drama queen when I can’t find my crown.

I want to give a big thank you to my Ops Manager for his unbreakable patience and understanding during this ordeal and my friends who acted like they didn't notice I was a repeat outfit violator.

If you or someone you know is suffering from lost inventory and cramped style. Follow the instructions above.

GeekSpeak – Space War! Join the discussion Saturday August 1st at 12pm SLT

This week the USA’s space force get their new logo (Semper Supra): Above Others.   Does it mark the start of a cold war in space?  Both China and Russia have already destroyed a test satellite in space. So, who knows?

Do you think that mutual threats will mean better technology for all of us?  Have wars helped us all?  Will a space war help us?

What will happen if one of the superpowers makes a space-based weapon first?  Will that be a done deal?

Come and join us.  Let’s hope we can survive any new development.  Bring your alien buddies who can phone home and hitch us a ride away from here.

GeekSpeak – Will you survive the Technological Singularity? Join the discussion Saturday July 18th at 12pm SLT

In a few short years the technological singularity will arrive.  Computers will not only be faster than humans, they will be more intelligent in every way and their intelligence will continue to increase.  And it is closer than you think.

How will it affect us personally?  Will we be treated as pets?  Will we enjoy being pets?   Will there be wars between different AI systems?  Will humans be involved in the computer wars?  Maybe you think our daily lives will not be affected much.  After all, even if it wants to, a superintelligent AI cannot make us happy.  We still have to work that out for ourselves.
How will the total AI domination roll out?  What jobs will be lost?  How will we live?  Will there ever be a time when it all collapses and humans can go back to ‘normal’ again?

Come and discuss our future as pets.  Bring your friends, and your pets.

GeekSpeak – How will SpaceX win the space race? Saturday 16th May at noon SLT

This week we will talk about SpaceX and some of the competition in the race for space.  Why will SpaceX win the race?  What are their plans for the next 5 years?

This is a time we really need to pay attention to, especially if you regret missing the moon landings.  This is your generation’s time.  Later this week, the launch of the first starship will hopefully be a reality.

Excitement is building in the space community. We will give you the best places to watch this historic moment in our life on earth.  Put your space helmet on and join us at GeekSpeak.  Bring your friends.

GeekSpeak – Return of the Luddites! Join the discussion May 9th at 12pm SLT

The Luddites destroyed weaving machines because they thought these ‘devilish’ things would drive them out of work.  Nowadays we see people refusing vaccination and burning telephone masts.

Why are people afraid of technology changes?  Were people afraid of fire, the wheel, the winchester, nuclear power or television?  Should we be afraid of future technology changes?
Do you think they all had a good reason to be wary?  Were these technological advances dangerous?  Did they take people’s jobs away?  Would you have been afraid of ancient technological progress?

Are you afraid of any modern technological advances?  If so, which?  And why?
Come and discuss the subject in our sunny auditorium.  Bring a friend.

GeekSpeak – Disruption! Why does technological disruption happen? Join the discussion February 15th at 12pm SLT

A disruptive technology displaces an earlier technology and changes the society it exists in.  The car disrupted the horse technology, the telephone disrupted the telegraph.  What makes a technology disruptive?  And how can we see it coming?  What will be the next great disruptor?  Will it ever end?  Will there be something like the Last Disruptor?  Or will we forever move forward in big, unexpected shocks?  Or could we move backwards?
Is it only technology that is affected by disruptors?  Can there be philosophical, religious, political disruptors?

Come and discuss why we are so bad at seeing the future that we often get surprised by disruptions.  Bring your friends!

GeekSpeak – the rise and rise of bitcoin. Join the Discussion Saturday 6/1 at 12pm SLT

Bitcoin is nearing 10k US dollars this week, so it is a good moment for all of us to get up to speed with what is happening in the cryptocurrency scene.

Why is bitcoin so important for the whole of humanity?  How much further will it rise before it completely takes over?  What will the world look like under a single monetary standard?  Will all countries be equal, or will some still manage to suppress others?

How will the culture change in a world of micropayments, where small amounts of money will change hands all the time, a world where your car will pay a few pennies to the road or to the traffic lights, and your phone will send a few cents to the streetlights.

Will corruption be impossible in a world where all data is stored on blockchains?

Are you too late to buy bitcoin or is there still a chance to make a fortune?

Get ready for the world of the future.  Bring your bitcoin mining pickaxe.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have ideas for new subjects.

GeekSpeak – 5G is coming! 5G is coming! Join the discussion Saturday April 20th at 12pm SLT

5G is coming.  What will that mean?  Will we all get fried by the data streams in the air, or will it usher in a whole new era?

What are the advantages of superfast data?  Will it enable thousands of drones to be in the air together?  Will it mean that self-driving cars finally take off?  Personalised ads on every corner wherever you walk?  Will it mean that everyone can look you up on Facebook before you walk around the corner?  Will every city be a forest of antennae?

What new developments can you think of?  How will human behaviour change once we are always online at high speed?  Will we ever want to go back?  Will we be able to?

Do you look forward to the new world?  Or does it frighten you?  Discuss the future with us at GeekSpeak.

IM Vulcan Viper if you have any ideas for new subjects.
