Being in touch with oneself creatively is essential for personal growth and emotional well-being. Creativity allows us to explore our inner worlds, express our deepest thoughts and feelings, and connect with others on a profound level. It serves as a form of self-discovery, helping us understand who we are and what we value.

After being disconnected from this very real portion of my person, I realized how crippling being this disjointed has been for me. I have tried to stuff myself in boxes that are very rigid and structured because I was made to doubt my past decisions to live freely and in technicolor, to live outside of the lines and be expressive. In turn, I forced myself to detach from my emotions as a form of therapy, which is at the core of creativity, which is at the core of being human.

In Second Life in particular, I have written for BUSTed, a now-defunct magazine that focused on the genesis of prim breasts and how it added aesthetic value to the female avatar user and their in-world appearance. It was my foray into the field of magazine journalism and an introduction to a creative outlet; however, I sold myself short chasing the money, seeing writing as a means to an end rather than as a developing passion, so I ran in an attempt to distance myself from the field only to find myself being reeled back.

After the passage of time, I found the Best of Second Life (BOSL) publication, which was a further delving into my creative self as the standards were greater, thus pushing me to my creative limits, breaking a cap I had looming overhead.

I am thankful.

Next, the SL Enquirer takes center stage in my professional life, serving an identical purpose to BOSL as it pushed me even further into the creative sphere. I found myself growing as a writer, a creative writer, as I made mistakes, messes, if you will, that are necessary in the creative space as it leads to a greater sense of self-expression.

Once more, my internal shadow reared its ugly head, standing on my path and forcing me to run again, and again, and again.

I finally decided to stop living inside the confines of self-imposed walls that are supported by societal buttresses. I have decided to break free of these shackles and reacquaint myself with the creative being that dwells in my soul.



I am extending a hand, reaching out and beckoning this creative light to come out of the darkness and shine all over the pages on which I choose to spell my emotions, my opinions, my research as I continue to use the written medium as my outlet until I have found this is not enough.

And you, readership, I invite along this journey to reconnect with your creative self as well. Shed that stale skin you were forced to live in and love your imagination and your humanity—the fuel for the creative fire that burns inside all of us. Embrace the messiness, the imperfections because in these conditions lies the beauty that is within every visionary that has put brush to canvas, hand to clay, or pen to paper.

Starting off the list is a place that I personally found the most valuable as an admittedly African-American user of Second Life—The Virtual Black History Museum. This includes well-known individuals like Harriet Tubman, conductor of the Underground Railroad, and Rosa Parks, a courageous African-American woman who refused to give up her seat on segregated buses.

The institution underscores the contributions of lesser-known but equally important figures such as Amelia Boynton Robinson, Daisy Bates, and Marsha P. Johnson, an African-American gay liberation activist and self-professed drag queen, responsible for a profound role in the Stonewall Inn Riots in Greenwich Village of 1969. The museum aims to amplify awareness of these events and the mentioned individuals for their contributions to African-American lives in America.

Common Grounds Cafe enhances the overall experience of the Vordun Museum by offering a place to slacken and recharge, making your visit even more enjoyable.

OPEN MIC Audition WINNER 10/30/24- Meet Veo Voom! Uniting people through Music- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

 

On October 30th, Open Mic Auditions took place at The SL Enquirer hosted by DJ Ninja and co host Wolfie Starfire. Talented artists from across the grid showed up to performance for a chance to win 5000L and a Spotlight Feature in the SL Enquirer. This event is gaining momentum on the music scene as a place for new and seasoned musicians to share their music with the SL World. It was hard to pick just one winner this round. 2nd place went to Miss Trish Crafton (oomissoootrishoo.nightingale) and the Winner  of the night was Veo Voom who surprised the audience with his performances.

Veo Voom began playing the piano in the 4th grade and later picked up his first guitar in the 6th grade. There was a period in his late teens and early twenties when he briefly took a break from the guitar to pursue electronic music production. 

During this time, he was signed to a UK record label and produced a remix of the main theme from the video game Skyrim, which garnered over 3 million views on YouTube. Yet again, Veo took another hiatus from all music due to a challenging relationship. This lasted for 4 years in his early twenties. 

After escaping that relationship, Veo immersed himself in playing acoustic guitar and singing. Veo has an eclectic taste and enjoys performing a wide range of music, from Oldies and Folk to Alternative Rock. He's also a multi-instrumentalist, proficient in guitar, piano, harmonica, accordion, bass, drums, and almost anything that's playable. Veo is dedicated to uplifting spirits and uniting people through his music.  The SL Enquirer sat down with Veo to learn more about this talented SL star.

Interview with Veo Voom

Lanai: Hi Veo, it is such a pleasure to be interviewing you. Congratulations on winning Open Mic Auditions at SLE! The prize was well deserved, you have a wonderful stage presence. How did you discover Second life?

Veo Voom: I discovered Second Life a little over 17 years ago. One of my friends told me about it and the thought of a virtual world that's created mainly by the users is such a brilliant idea. A place where people can create and share their love for so many things is so beautiful.

Lanai:I agree!  It’s always exciting to get up close and personal with musical talent here in Second life. You’ve been involved in music from a very young age beginning with Piano. Who were your music inspirations leading you to picking up a guitar in your teen years?

Veo Voom: My biggest inspiration was my dad. He would always be playing guitar or piano in the house growing up and he was always so very supportive of my musical endeavors. For my 12th birthday, I was surprised with a red Squier Stratocaster and a practice amp and I was over the moon! I'll never forget, within minutes of opening it and picking it up, the very first song I figured out by ear was Crazy Train by Black Sabbath haha.

Lanai: I love it! My father played guitar. When I was little I would dance on his guitar case while he played.   You have come a long way in your music career.  You signed to a label in The UK in your early 20’s and created the remix of the main theme from the video game Skyrim. That’s pretty cool. Can you tell me a little bit about that and how it helped enhance your presence online? 

Veo Voom: Oh yes! I've always had a love for electronic music ever since I heard Eiffel 65's album Europop. During my last year of high school and through the following couple of years I started learning more about producing electronic music. I went down many rabbit holes online learning as much as possible about music production, synthesizer programming, and much more! I would frequent many forums and subreddits to learn and grow with other producers. I then started putting out originals on Soundcloud and started up a YouTube as well. I would try to enter as many remix contests as possible just to get more practice under my belt. I was putting out a lot of originals both on Soundcloud and Youtube and it caught the eye of Rockforce Records. I ended up signing with them and putting out a 4 track EP under the artist name Kostya. Eventually, the label dissolved and I didn't see anything from it other than my tunes being on streaming services. Then when the video game Skyrim came out in 2011, I was so entranced by the main theme. 14 hours later I created an entire remix and only used the chanting vocals from the theme. It received some positive feedback initially and I was happy with what I put out. Fast forward a few months it started ramping up to 25 thousand views. Every time the game had a different version or remaster come out on a new system, it would make the remix relevant again. Today the video is at over 3.2 million views and I never believed it would reach such heights.

Lanai: Very impressive! On a personal level. Relationships can shape the trajectory of our lives. In your case it was a small setback in your career. How has this changed your life for the better?

Veo Voom: Well in my worst relationship, I put music down for about 4 years. Being without it for that long and losing who I was makes me appreciate it even more now than ever! If I ever have a day where I'm not feeling as creative as I could be, I just think back to those years when I wasn't allowed to create. 

Lanai: I feel you creativity should never be stifled. To really stand out in the SL Music scene, you have to have something special about your performances. How do you define your music style?  

Veo Voom: I would consider my music style folky, indie, and eclectic. I'm always trying to keep things interesting and fun during my performances. I'll try to add a joke lyric relevant to something in chat or I'll mix it up and switch to banjo from guitar.

Lanai: Personalizing shows for a Sl audience is a perfect way to engage your audience here.  If you can collaborate with any musician in SL or RL, who would it be and why?

Veo Voom: One day I would love to collaborate with Tally Mercury! We've got a lot of similar tastes in music and I feel like our sounds would mesh well. He's just such a talented musician, performer and songwriter.

Lanai: I'd be interested to see that collaboration too.  An SL stage is so different from performing in RL. How Does it differ from your RL stage presence?

Veo Voom: In RL I'll be bopping around a good bit and I try to bring that into SL (though it's hard sitting in a chair and not being able to move my avi independently). I do feel like I'm more comfortable in SL just because I feel like I can connect with the audience more directly versus some RL spots I've played at.

Lanai: What are your landmark performances?  Best Memories performing both in RL and in SL?

Veo Voom: I think some of my best memories come from performing at friends' birthdays and rezz days. There's just something so special about an intimate show with your close friends on SL.

Lanai: You’ve been on the grid for over 17 years now. What advice would  you give new musicians starting out in SL?

Veo Voom: Go to as many open mics or karaoke as you can! Just get out there, make friends, lift each other up, and have fun!

Lanai: Great advice.  Do you have a manager? If not, How can venues book you for performances?

Back in August of 2023, we sat down with Dia to talk about  the SL DJ & Hosts Hall of Fame venue that celebrated it’s 9th year highlighting  legends in the SL Music scene. We are back for to see what’s happening now as we approach its 10th year milestone.  The Sl Enquirer sat down with Dia once again for a review.

SLE: Hey Dia, it’s good to see you again. Congratulations are in order for your 10th year milestone! Can you give us a little bit of background on you and his unique venue?

Dia Dufaux; HOF has been an integral part of SL for over a decade. The ownership team includes myself, Dia Dufaux, and my partner DJ Chris Greybeard. We also have two co-owners, our SL daughter Rae Greybeard and SL son Jonny. Most importantly, we are supported by a remarkable board of inducted DJs and hosts who generously volunteer their time to review applicants and vote them in. Many of our board members have been with us for years, and their assistance is crucial to our operations. HOF's sole purpose is to honor the incredible talent found in SL clubs. 

SLE: It is so nice to see venues like yours continuing to serve the people of Second life and recognize their talents and what they do for SL Music and events.  What does it take to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Dia dufaux: It's really simple to apply.   Stop by our landing platform and grab an application, meet the requirements on the application, give us a completely fill out appl, with  the djs or hosts schedule along with LM to the clubs and the djs or host calling card.  Also, you probably should read the nc we include in our application to let you know what we look for at the HOF, so there are no surprises if you don't make it. The HOF is very strict when it comes to viewing  applicants. Our board members are working djs and hosts too. When an applicant is a no show at their event, or their stream is as good as it should be. It tends to be a waste of our time.    

SLE: It’s understandable by holding high standards it is important to determine the right nominees. Who were the latest  nominees inducted into the SL Hall of fame this past year?

 

 Dia dufaux: WE HAD INDUCTED OVER 43 DEEJAYS AND HOSTS INDUCTED THIS YEAR!

SLE:  It is so nice to see venues like yours continuing to serve the people of Second life and recognize their talents and what they do for SL Music and events.  What does it take to be inducted into the Hall of Fame? 

dia dufaux: At the SLDJS&H Hall of Fame, we recognize three levels of awards. 

First Award: This is for Hall of Fame DJs and Hosts who have at least two years of experience. 

Second Award: This is awarded to DJs and hosts who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame and have more than ten years of experience. 

Third Award: The most distinguished, the Lifetime Achievement Award, is presented to honorary DJs and hosts who have dedicated over fifteen years to contributing to the Second Life community's development.

SLE: Last year when we interviewed you, We checked out the memorial for those who are no longer with us. I have to say, that is such a noble gesture to keep their spirits alive and give their friends a place to reflect on them and what they brought to the SL Music community. I know it takes a lot to keep the lights on. How can the community help keep the flame burning for future Sl generations?

 

 Dia Dufaux:Supporting us is quite simple. You can visit the Hall of Fame, add us to your favorites, leave a donation in the jar, tell your friends and family about us, and if you're interested, apply for a talented DJ or host that you may know. 

SLE: You have a special event coming up very soon. Can you share with our readers all the deets? 

Dia.dufaux: Yes, although I don't have a specific start date yet. The Hall of Fame event will coincide with our inaugural fundraiser, supporting a cause close to our hearts and aiding those in need. Our goal is to assist individuals affected by the hurricanes in North Carolina. We plan to invite DJs and hosts in Second Life to volunteer their time for this effort.

SLE: Even the virtual world can make a difference in the lives of those devastated by natural disasters. I applaud that.  I’m sure readers are wondering how they can nominate their favorite hosts and DJs,. How can they go about it? What is the criteria for nominees?

Dia Dufaux: Our application process is located at our landing page, which includes complete details on what we're seeking in a regular DJ or HOST. For an honorary DJ or Host, 10 years of experience is required. I recommend that applicants visit there to begin the process. Please note, any DJ or HOST aspiring to join HOF must have a minimum of 2 years' experience working in SL clubs.

SLE: Are you currently hiring? If so, what positions do you have available and how can SL job seekers apply?

Dia Dufaux:Unfortunately, we are not currently hiring, but we are always on the lookout for Hall of Fame DJs and hosts who have been inducted to join us as board members. Applications are available at the landing platform.
