Other Holidays for the Month of February

Did you know this month is not only reserved for Valentine’s Day?  Here are a few, some of which are bizarre holidays that share observance this month and deserve a little mention in The SL Enquirer.   Let’s examine what they are.

This Month
  • ·         Creative Romance Month- We get it since Valentine’s Day is a popular day of this month.
  • ·         Black History Month- this month celebrates the achievements of African Americans in U.S History.
  • ·         National Wedding Month- The most popular months for weddings are June, August, September, October and May so why is this month the National Wedding Month? We don’t get it but OK.
  • ·         National Cherry Month- Whoever decided to create this one should known cherry season is in the Summer. Some people are ass backwards but again…OK
  • ·         National Grapefruit Month- Uhhh yea. What is so special about a grapefruit besides the fact it actually curbs hunger . Whoopty dooooo.
  • ·         American Heart Month-  Are you at risk for heart disease? Our hearts are an important part of our very existence. If it doesn’t work…well you know the rest. Use this month to get a check up and make sure your ticking like you should.
  • ·         Great American Pie Month- We don’t recommend celebrating this month by doing something obscene to a pie…
  • ·         Canned Food Month- Participating in a canned goods food drive would be the ideal way to observe this one. Wouldn’t it be great if we all donated to our local food banks?
  • ·         An Affair to Remember – How romantic is this one? Either it means to reflect on a special cheating episode or some kind of Broadway Musical…
  • ·         February 15- Singles Awareness Day- How cruel is this one? As if singles didn’t realize this yesterday?
  • ·         February 17- Random Act of Kindness Day- Do something nice for those you meet this day and hope that they pay it forward to help bring about some kind of world peace contribution.
  • ·         International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day- Did I miss something? WTH?

Don’t forget to Celebrate the 3rd Week of February by observing International Flirting Week! As a word of precaution, you might want to practice using voice verification in Second Life to avoid an awkward situation.

I’M A CHRISTMAS TREE HUGGER- Silky Soulstar Reporting...

December 1, 2008: “I’m here to apply for the job as Christmas Tree.”

Now that’s a funny reply within a conversation, and hardly the kind of response that would someday lead to thousands of dollars raised globally to benefit needy children.  But in Norway a Christmas tree can humorously be anything audaciously colorful, and RL NorwegianSunday Laks had just TP’d into SL’s Asian Teahouse for women wearing a dress that was over-the-top with color.  She really didn't know that she was about to start a project that would become really generous.

We all know that our SL meta-world can encourage something creatively bizarre to morph into something unexpected and wonderful.  So rather inauspiciously, Teahouse founder Sapphia Duccrat appointed Sunday Laks as her official living Christmas Tree.  And oh Christmas Tree, oh Christmas Tree, Sunday stood dutifully at her post in the Teahouse.

Six years later, on December 20, 2014, Sunday was still standing for a little while, and on duty at the Teahouse in a dress custom-designed by her favorite designer Eliza Wierwright of Patron. These days while adorned in her pretty Christmas Tree dress, Sunday surrounds herself with presents and a tip jar to raise donations to SOS Childrens Villages International.

Hermann Gmeiner founded the first SOS Childrens Village in Austria in 1949 to help orphans suffering as a result of World War II.  The charity has grown to include villages in 134 countries globally.  In each center, children are afforded schools, health care, and other family-based services.

“I stood here all of December that first year, and thought of it more like an artistic performance.  I was doing security duties as well of course.”

And the next year she did the same until someone suggested that she should have a tip jar.

“I figured I might as well do something useful while I was standing here, so I made this jar and the gifts and all.  And I started emoting when the girls tipped me.”

That first year Sunday raised L$ 133,000 and donated it to SOS Childrens Villages at the end of the month. The Teahouse is now owned by Maia Mimulus, and the venue is still very pleased to have Sunday on staff.  Maia donates all of the Teahouse December donations to the same SOS Childrens Villages charity.  This month-to-date, Sunday and the Asian Teahouse have raised over $L 76,000.

Why did she pick her charity?

“SOS Childrens Villages has a very high reputation in Norway and I trust them, they also have less admin costs of any of the big charity organizations I know.  They have websites in many languages, which is good in this multi-cultural virtual world.  I have also visited one of their villages in Thailand, that's why I picked them in the first place.”

This year, Sunday is adding a gift to each person who donates in the form of an “I’m a Christmas Tree Hugger” tag.

“It’s my payback for standing here all year doing nothing but looking pretty,” she adds.

And so the charity continues inspiring each year.  Sunday’s Christmas charm shines like the star that the original shepherds followed.

“People are drawn to her,” gushes Teahouse staffer Vivian Karfield.

Maybe we’re drawn to support and give to her charity as 'tis the season.  Or maybe we're just in awe of the sweet girl in a Christmas Tree dress. Whatever it is you can't quite place, there is really something about Sunday that is really inspirational, or even part magical.  Everyone who meets her believes.

Her smile is infectious through the words she chats, “One year I had a great tipper.  She asked me how much I had so far, and then she put in the same amount on my last day.  Miracles happen when I least expect them.”

Yes they do!  And after my own donation, I can say that I believe too, and am officially privileged to be a Christmas Tree Hugger.

Celebrating the Holiday Season Around the World ~ December

Who says, Christmas and New Year are the only holidays observed this season?
There are many festivals celebrated widely around the world this December. And Second Life isn’t behind in celebrating them. The following are the list of festivals:

  • ·         Christmas
  • ·         New Year’s Eve
  • ·         Burning the Devil
  • ·         Hogmanay Festival
  • ·         Hot Air Balloon Festival
  • ·         Junkanoo Festival
  • ·         Winterfest Boat Parade
  • ·         Whirling Dervishes Festival
  • ·         Sunburn Festival Goa
  • ·         Hannukah
  • ·         Kwanzaa
  • ·         Klausjagen
  • ·         L’escalade
  • ·         Reveillon

       And many others.

. Well, now that we know a few, I would mention only those few in detail, which have also found its place in Second Life.

Christmas
It is one of the most popular Christian celebrations in the Western Church as well as in Second Life. This holiday commemorates the birth of Jesus on December 25th. For observers, it is the season of gift giving and sharing a feast with family and friends. Traditions include putting up a Christmas tree, decorating with lights, garland, wreaths and wearing ugly Christmas sweaters.

There are even classic Christmas Carols and stories shared including the iconic Santa Clause who comes to town giving all the good children gifts while leaving lumps of coal for the naughty.

Be sure to check the SL search for Christmas parties and events happening now until Christmas day. There are too many to name here!

New Year’s Eve
New Year celebrations begin on December 31st as people around the prepare for a new year as it begins in each time zone. In New York City, the traditional ball is dropped in Times Square witnessed by thousands in the street as  well on television. Many have New Year resolutions to break bad habits from the year prior or to begin a new phase in their lives with the ones they love. At the stroke of midnight, you will normally see parties happening, tons of confetti and music playing as well as many dropping to one knee to ask for their lover’s hand in marriage. This celebration marks a new beginning for all as the New Year begins.
In Second Life, festivities and events will happen all day as the clock strikes midnight across the time zones. If you are observing New Years in Second Life, don’t do it alone. Find a party and ring in 2015 with new and old friends. Looking to do a ball drop at your locations. I find a place where you can buy one along with a firework display!

Kwanzaa
It is a week-long celebration held in the United States and also celebrated in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving. According to Karenga, the name Kwanzaa derives from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning "first fruits of the harvest". It celebrates the principles, each day dedicated to one principle.

1.    Umoja or Unity is celebrated on the first day to strive for and maintain the unity in the family, community, nation and race.
2.    Kujichagulia or Self Determination is celebrated on the second day to define, name, create for and speak for ourselves.
3.     Ujima or Collective work and Responsibility is celebrated on the third day to build our community together; make our brother’ and sister’ problems our problems and to solve them together.
4.    Ujamaa or Cooperative Economics is celebrated on the fourth day to build and main our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together
5.    Nia or Purpose is celebrated on the fifth to make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
6.    Kuumba or Creativity on the sixth to do as always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited
7.    Imani or Faith on the seventh day to believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
In Second Life: A party at the Gallery, on Friday, December 26th, 2014. Dj Voodoo and Dj Pike would be playing. This is a 4 hour event sponsored by Love Cats. Theme of the event is to wear best African inspired Outfit. The board would be set at L$ 300 plus a L$ 500 gift card for the winner and a L$ 150 gift card for everyone who stops by.

Hannukah
It is also known as Chanukah, the festival of lights is a Jewish holiday. It celebrates and commemorates events that took place over 2300 years ago in the land of Judea, Israel. Antiochus, the Syrian king commanded Jews to worship the Greek Gods, prohibiting them from the practise of their own religious beliefs. One man, Judah Maccabee defied the imperial dictator. He fought against the king along with his brothers for 3 years. The Syrians were driven out of Judea and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem reclaimed. The temple was cleaned and lit. It was dedicated to the N’er Tamid. There was barely enough oil to last a day, however, as if a miracle, the light burnt for 8 days. Since then, Hannukah is commemorated in triumph of faith by lighting candles in the menorah, one candle for each night, the centre one to begin with. It begins on 25th day of Hebrew month of Kislev.

In Second Life: The Grim's Domain Family Realm is presenting an off season Hanukkah special event for Relay for Life at the Chapel of Yeshua. They will be having 8 days of live music, DJ's and open mic for your entertainment to raise funds for Relay For Life. The singers are Emma Maria Bellisim, Gem Sunkiller, Hitomi Rosewood James and others.

SL ARTS & LITERATURE: Discovering an Ancient Celebration with a Virtual Twist.

The Yule Festival in OZLAND began December 10th and will continue through January 2nd , 2011. It boasts a vast array of events, an incredible festival site in the ruins of an Ancient Roman Fort, and a heart and celebratory spirit in the Celtic tradition. The Yule Festival is the first of eight such annual events produced by The Wild Fox Rovers that coincide with the Celtic Year. Poetry, Storytelling, Music and a Snow-person building contest all are part of this diverse celebration. This event caught my attention because of my interest in the bardic and oral storytelling traditions of the Celtic people. With the Festival being almost a month long, there is still plenty of time to catch the great events and enjoy the spirit of Yule in Second Life.

3. Use your Greetings Card Program and make Christmas Cards for family and friends before your connection returns and you slack.
