GeekSpeak – The Logistics of Space- Join the discussion Saturday March 2nd at 12pm SLT

Soon we will start building in space and on the moon and Mars.  What will our bases and space stations look like?  What will they be made of?  It will be hard to make plastics on the moon, but aluminium is very common and it will be simple to make concrete from moon dust.  Water and iron are easy to find on asteroids.  Will future space stations be made entirely of iron?  Or ice?

This week we will try to imagine how future space locations will look when they are built and maintained from the local resources: ISRU (in-situ resource utilization).  They may look very different from the ones we see in science fiction.  Would you rather live in a metal base or an ice base?

What materials will we always need from Earth?  And what materials will people in space send back to Earth?  Discover the silk road of the future with us.

GeekSpeak – what will the future world of robots and humans be like?

How will society change when every car, every bus stop, every toaster and every shop assistant is a robot?  At what point will we think that robots should have human rights?  When will it become illegal to shoot your toaster or leave your food too long in the fridge so that she looks bad and can’t marry your car?  If you make your car drive over a cliff will you be charged with murder because you killed an AI?

Will there be novels and soap operas about the emotional lives of robots?  Will there be new robot art forms?  Will humans enjoy the robot novels, soaps and art?  Or will we have 2 separate cultures, human and robotic?  Do you think you will ever have a robot friend?

GeekSpeak – how will we change when we go into space?

What will humans become once we venture out of the earth’s protective environment?

Will humans be carefully chosen for all colonizing missions?  Only very small people, because it saves on food and space?  Only those with little aggression, for obvious reasons?

Will humans be engineered for space colonization?  Will their DNA be changed to protect them from radiation sickness?  Will they be given chloroplasts so they can make their own food?  Will we send people into space as brains in jars?

And how will selection and adaptation work in space?  Will we grow taller on the moon?  Will we adapt to the temperature on Mars or Venus?

GeekSpeak – is there life after Google?

This week we will discuss the upcoming changes in the structure and culture of the internet.  The internet is only about 35 years old and it is not as solid as you might think.  The geeks who built the net began to feel about 20 years ago that it was taking a wrong turn. The internet we have now is controlled by just two companies.  That was not the original dream.

Changes are coming though, and the internet may be a free place again, an internet ‘of the people, by the people, for the people’. How will this work out?  Will we really see the end of Google?

GeekSpeak – what if we had to restart civilisation?

Imagine being one of a hundred people suddenly stranded in a forest, maybe on a strange planet, while all the rest of humanity has disappeared along with all technology.

Would your small group be able to restart a civilization?  How long would it be before you could use electricity again?  How long before you had metal? Would a lot of knowledge just get lost over the generations before it could be used?

What would be the first technology you would reinvent?  Would you think of fire, clothes, houses, watermills, hunting skills?  What legal system, what stories, what songs would you preserve?  Would there be anything we have now that you would want to forget, anything you would never tell your descendants about?

Would the new history of humankind take a totally different route or would it all work out in the same way whatever you do?

Now that the new year has started let’s get our brains working again and think of some predictions for 2019.  This time next year, when we look back at 2019, what will we see?

Will there be big political shifts?  Will there be new countries starting?  Or old countries disappearing?  New alliances, new forms of government, new empires?  New wars, with new and horrible weapons?  Or will 2019 be a year of peace?

Will there be an economic collapse or will we enter a new golden age of technology?  Will there be scientific breakthroughs?  In fusion, or nanotech?  Or genetic engineering?  Or robotics? Will you ride in a self-driving car in 2019?  Or go into space?

Will we be able to meet this time next year to talk about it?  Will Second Life still be here?

GeekSpeak – will 2019 see the start of a race to the moon?

China has landed a lunar rover on the far side of the moon.  What will happen because of this?  How will other countries react?

When there are two massive bodies interacting in space there are five points where the gravitational forces balance out and it is easy to place satellites or space stations.  These are the Lagrange points. China has a satellite at the L2 point for Earth and the moon.  These Lagrange points are very important space real estate.  There may be a new race to claim the other four.

Will countries ditch the moon treaty?  Will China agree to allow access to their base and the L2 point?  Will we see multiple bases and multiple claims at the end of 2019?  Should we be worried about all this?  Should we be afraid of the power of China?

GeekSpeak – what would it be like to live with a Social Credit System?

China is creating a social credit system where everyone has to behave well or they lose social credit points.  Your social credit score will determine where you can live, whether you can travel, whether you can buy or rent a car, in fact it will determine what your life will be like.

What would it be like to live with such a system?  Will there be a black market in social credits?  Will people find ways to cheat?

Will the system lock the culture in one state forever because no one will dare to be different?  No one will ever dye their hair pink?  What will happen to the people who fall below the minimum credit level?

Will some people be happy with the social credit system?  If they can upvote and downvote people it may give them the illusion of control.

Will the social credit system be established in the west?  Come and discuss the future of citizen control. Entry only if you have 10 credit points.

GeekSpeak – how do we prevent an AI from going rogue?

When more and more AIs are interacting with humans and becoming powerful there will be many cases where we wish there was an off switch.  Indeed it is already happening.  Microsoft had to delete its chatbot Tay because it became racist after talking to people on Twitter.

How can we prevent an AI from turning against us?  Should we make laws?  Will that be enough? Who will be responsible for the racism or sexism of AIs? Can AIs be controlled by law?

Maybe we simply have to accept that AIs will be independent.  Some will be good, some bad.  Some will not understand the distinction.  Will we all use AI protection in the future as we use virus scanners now?  Can we trust good AIs to protect us against bad AIs?

Or must we accept that we are heading for digital oblivion?

In the future we will have huge energy demands.  Will we have to make our own energy?  Will we all have to install solar panels, wind turbines on the roof, a human waste converter?  Will we be forced to do this? Once we see the light (forgive the pun) will we ever want to go back to company energy?

How would the world look if everyone had to produce energy?  Will large energy plants completely disappear?  Could we make money by selling energy?

We humans are, in this day and age, human-centric.  But there is a time coming when Big Data will be the center of all our actions and decisions.  Algorithms will make all our decisions for us.  They will decide whom we will marry, whom we will vote for.  Algorithms will know so much more about us than we know about ourselves.

When will we realize that we are not completely human any more?  When will ‘human’ mean something different? When will we be ruled by the algorithm?  Will Dataism become a new religion?  When will you be happy to give your life over to Google?

Robots will be running the world some day.  But what happens before they take over?  When the roads have both self-driving cars and human driven cars?  When some of us have bots that shop for us and some of us must go to the supermarket and shop with bots?  When some of us have only human friends and some have bot friends?

Will the roads have special lanes for self-driving cars?  Or special lanes for human driven cars?  Will there be laws, like the red flag act, that will prevent technology from growing? Will bots have to get degrees or diplomas just because humans need them?  Will marriages between humans and bots be allowed?

Will we want to stop the process?  Should we?  Will we be able to?

GeekSpeak – how smart will your smartphone get?

One day you will discover that your smartphone is smarter than you are.  It will not only have more brainpower; its senses will be better than yours.  It will sense temperature, air quality, pollen count, radiation as well as your heartbeat, weight and stress level. And all smartphones will be talking to each other.

What other senses will phones have?  Do you see a time when they will contain Geiger counters?  Lie detectors? 

Will they always be external to us or will we start implanting phones into our brains?  Will the connections between these implanted phones slowly turn us into the Borg?  Would that be a bad thing?  Will some people choose to be Borg?
