Spotlight on Scotch & Soda- An Experiential NFT project in Second Life - SLE REPORTING

NFTs are non-fungible tokens and are non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain that can be sold and traded. In early 2021, interest in NFTs skyrocketed after a number of high-profile sales auctions netted digital artists hundreds of thousands of dollars. The highest amount paid for an NFT was The Merge bought by 28,983 collectors for a total of almost $100 million!  It was only a matter of time before residents of Second Life would showcase NFT art.

Scotch and Soda Gallery is an Experiential NFT project that showcases established and emerging NFT artists in a mixed reality setting. Scotch and Soda is the culmination of two people's drive and passion for something more than hanging art as a display. Art is to be experienced. Second life is arguably one of the first metaverses of its kind and it was fitting for Scotch and Soda to open its first virtual reality 3D experiential gallery in that world. The gallery currently has three experiential installations open featuring Dark Pinkup, StarCards, and Ultra Rare.

Interview with Scotch (scotch.darkheart)

SLE: HI Scotch, you are the first Second Life resident who approached us with an in-world NFT art gallery! Can you tell our readers about Scotch & Soda NFT Gallery and what types of artwork you currently have showcased?

Scotch: We feature a multitude of art stylings most notable are the artists that I have been working with for a few years now such as Starcards, Ultrarare, Exit Limbo and the newly added Dark Pinup. We also intend to host upcoming artists, to the digital space, that on’t have a lot of exposure but deserve it.

SLE: Is your gallery open to any digital artist to showcase their work? If so how can they get involved?

Scotch: Anyone that has an interest in having their art shown is welcome to reach out and start that conversation with us. We are an NFT experiential gallery, so we like to highlight digital art on the blockchain.

SLE: Is the NFT artwork currently on display available for sale?

Scotch: Yes it is for sale however we do not yet have an in-game marketplace that would allow us to sell art in Linden but that is in the works.

SLE: Since NFTs are non-fungible tokens, how can you ensure NFT protection so that they cannot be duplicated or copied by anyone in Second Life using a simple snippet tool or screenshots?

Scotch: The nature of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) is that they are, in fact, not a screenshot or a snippet. NFTs are a digital asset. NFTs can be multimedia with moving parts and music. They can also have utility in gaming and other platforms. Imagine playing a card game on your PC, but owning all the cards. Because of this, you would be able to take them to whatever platform you wanted and trade them for better cards, just like you would a physical deck, you might buy in your local comic book store.

The artists are paid for their work, not only the first time it sells but also as an ongoing percentage of every resale of that NFT. If set up correctly the artist will always get a royalty paid to them. This is a way to support artists that may never be given an opportunity to have their work shown let alone profit from it. Sure, anyone can take a screenshot or copy and save most anything they see on a computer screen but it’s always going to be just that. A copy, a fake. It's incredibly easy to verify if an NFT is a copy, far easier than detecting counterfeit physical goods. The fake NFT copies have no value. When you copy you are not showing support for the artist. Scotch and Soda value art. So should everyone.

SLE: Your gallery currently showcases several pieces that are very reminiscent of Garbage Pail kid cards and colorful hippie art.  Who are the artists?

Scotch: Interesting that you said that. One of the artists came over from the Garbage Pail kids NFT project so definitely some of the influence in those great pieces from Ultra Rare. The psychedelic-style NFTs are from the team over at Starcards.

SLE: I noticed there was a stage on your property. What type of events do you host?

Scotch: Soda and I are big fans of live music. We will be hosting everything from Acoustic to Zydeco (had to). But wait that’s not all we also utilize the stage for other events such as Queens of Burlesque, seasonally themed performances, and the best of them all, Puppy adoptions!

SLE: Are you currently hiring? If so, what positions are available?

Scotch: We are always looking for designers, photographers, builders, stylists, and fashion designers. We generally work on a per-project basis but as we grow that could change.

SLE: Can you tell our readers why you decided to open Scotch & Soda? Was it to help promote fellow artists or just a love for art and to introduce NFTs to the second life community?

Scotch: Scotch and Soda Gallery is a collaborative effort between me and Soda. We opened the galley out of common interests. A passion for great art and killer music. (metal devil horns in the air) Soda and I had worked together on projects that always had a middle man or some outside interference that kept us from the potential that we could see in one another. We support and encourage each other to excel without envy. We wanted to bring that good energy to a metaverse that checked all the boxes for us. The mother of all metaverses. Second life.  We wanted to be the first to introduce the work of NFT artists that we have been following, and working with, in a way no one had done before.

SLE: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Scotch: Scotch and Soda Gallery is an experiential NFT project that showcases established and emerging NFT artists in a mixed reality setting. The art is shown, not on drab walls, but within a 3D environment. We invite you to come and experience it for yourself.  As always, if you like what we do, tell people about us.

SPOTLIGHT FEATURE: "Also Painters” Exhibition at La Gallery Grand Opening March 25th at 3:30 SLT pm Sponsored by The SL Enquirer

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” - Salvador Dali

Dali couldn’t have said it any better. Artists aren’t just limited to one craft. From painters and sculptures to poets and musicians. Art has many branches of inspiration. In Second Life, the art community is spread across the virtual landscape with many talented people showcasing their work in a plethora of mediums from photography, sketches, watercolor, and graphic arts to mesh sculptures, textures, and builds. But they are not limited to virtually created art, art lovers from all over the world, and venue curators also recognize and celebrate famous artists as well.

La Gallery, The New Art Space presents a unique exhibition experience featuring musicians like Bob Dylan, David Bowie, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, and more who extended their musical talent into canvas paintings. Be sure to check out this impressive exhibition kicking off on March 25th at 3:30 pm SLT. Curated by Lalle Vanbeeck-Na and sponsored by The SL Enquirer.

SLE met up with Lalle to learn more about La Gallery, this event, and what’s to come.

Interview with Lalle Vanbeeck-Na (lallena)

SLE: How did you discover Second Life and what inspired you to get involved in the Art community?

Lalle: I believe I was barely 17 the first time I logged on to SL. It was an RL friend who took me on this adventure. At first, I found it horribly complicated. And I stayed for a very short time. I came back a little later and I learned little by little not without some difficulty at times. And 8 years later, I realize that I am very far from knowing everything. I must confess that I never thought I would stay so long in this world... Almost 10 years now!!

And what inspired me to get involved in the Art community?
Very young in RL, I visited Parisian museums with my parents. I liked... Also, I learned music and the piano... It opened my eyes to the different artistic periods... After high school and the baccalaureate, I did two years of art history at university. It's almost natural that I got involved in this in SL.

SLE: Can you define art and what it means to you personally?

Lalle: It's hard to answer that question without sounding a little... bombastic.
I remember at the beginning of my art studies, we lingered for a long time on how to define art, on the people's definitions, known or not, on the word "art". Each one according to the periods, the places, the fields of activity, can have its own definition.

In a general way, I would say that art is characterized by human works which by their aestheticism and their beauty are intended to provoke the emotions of those who look at them... We often oppose art and nature... If you are on the beach and you watch a beautiful sunset... you think it's beautiful... But it's not art except to consider that it's the work of God...
If you look at a beautiful sunset on a painting or even on a photo... You can say that it is art because it is human creation... Art is the creation of human beings. So the beauty of things is subjective, everyone with their own perception and their own sensitivity... In two words, I would say art... it's aesthetics and emotion...

SLE: Are you yourself artistic in any way or just a lover of the arts? If you are can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and your talents?

Lalle: I'm more of an art lover and I won't say I'm an artist or at home in my living room...I've been playing the piano for a long time and I love it but I'm not good enough to show off in front of a public.. I'm testing myself in digital art and I'm trying to work on an idea and a personal concept but I don't know if I'll succeed... so for now, I prefer to be discreet about this: )

Parallel to this exhibition "Also Painters", I present some of the photos that I extracted from a video clip of a French group "Paradis"... I liked the song and the atmosphere of this video in red color which will also be released during this exhibition... But these are unpretentious photos.

SLE: Is this the first gallery that you have curated in Second Life, if not what other kind of art or creative gallery have you been involved with before?

Lalle: It's my first gallery... But I've been thinking about it for a long time... I even had a project with a friend on a somewhat "erotic" exhibition idea, but it didn't come to fruition. .. When I had the idea of this exhibition on these "celebrities who are also painters", the project developed little by little in my head... and it finally materializes.

SLE: What inspired you to create La Gallery and this exhibition of Celebrity art? Can you tell our readers about the exhibition and art pieces you have on display?

Lalle: First of all, it was when I found the theme of the exhibition that made me decide to create this gallery. I thought the subject was good enough to do so.

In fact, one day, I was reading an article in a magazine about musicians who were also painters like Bob Dylan for example ... I found the idea interesting... so I looked a little closer... I searched a lot around and realized that there were a lot of them: musicians, singers, actors... I gathered around sixty artists and selected around 150 different paintings. I knew their name for the most part, but not necessarily their music and even less their painting... I got to know them better. Some are well known: Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Ronnie Wood, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, Peter Doherty... actors also: Johnny Depp, Sylvester Stallone, Jim Carrey...

SLE: With this gallery of art, what is your goal here? To just show the work of celebrities or are the pieces for sale?

Lalle: As I said before, I had this gallery idea in the back of my mind for a while. This theme of famous unknown painters decided me to create it.
For this exhibition, nothing is for sale. It's just the fun of doing something concrete in SL and to show the work of these celebrities indeed. There is no idea of gain or profit in this project. On the contrary, it widens my bank overdraft... smiles.

SLE: How can artists showcase their work at La Gallery? What kind of art are you looking for?

Lalle: In the simplest way. They can contact me and present their project, their work, their idea for an exhibition. There is no predefined concept for this gallery. I'm open to anything... painting, sculpture, photography, design, performance... They can just present their work or sell it if they wish. There can also be several exhibitions at the same time. The main idea must be to offer exhibitions that are attractive enough to make people want to visit.

SLE: Can you share with our readers any upcoming events and exhibitions you have planned?

Lalle: The current exhibition will run for two months from March 25 until May 25, 2022. And possibly longer. For the future, nothing is planned for the moment... I have some personal ideas and in particular a project a little more "erotic" with performances... And I'm also waiting for proposals from artists in SL.

SLE: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

Lalle: I hope I made them want to come and see this first exhibition. They are all invited to come to the inauguration which will take place on Friday, March 25 at 3:30 PM / SLT. The evening will be hosted by a DJ. We expect many of you.

Unreal Art and Music at the Janus Gallery

You are cordially invited to join us Saturday, August 7th from 12pm-3pm slt for the opening of Francis Bagration’s new exhibit in the Janus Gallery, entitled, "Electric Owls on my Shoulder."  Dandy Pianoman and Reno Jones will perform live, making for a wonderful afternoon of art and music. Francis says of himself and his work:

My specialty these days consists of 3D abstract landscape rendering,Op Art, fractals, photography, and graphic design, all separate and often blended.

I often try to project a feeling of calm and meditation, while other pieces are meant to be exciting and stimulating. To help people feel included in a comfortable surrounding, I try and bring a sense of peace from within my own creative being. My art color palette is heavily influenced by late 1960's poster artists Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Wes Wilson, and Roger Dean. My contemporary influences include Alex Grey and Luke Brown. I use five separate programs to create my digital art. Since high school I have very been interested in photography, and I have been a macro and landscape photographer for many years.

I also have studied Typography and lettering as well as several traditional fine art techniques.  I started with drawing and painting, as well as sculpture, initially ceramic, later carving wood and stone, then casting bronze.

Lately in RL and SL I have been creating unique imagery for clients, based on a digital photography. I am more than willing to provide custom work to meet my clients' needs.
I have created several slide shows and dance floors and I'm currently working on stage decor.

CROSSED LOOK OVER A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN : OPENING ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21st

On Saturday, February 21st 2015 at noon SLT Moumou’s Square will host a beautiful exhibition showing artworks from Ermandalee and Lo Coeur. Both artists have been asked by Trinity Yazimoto, owner of this beautiful garden, to work on inedit artworks about the place all landscaped by the so talented Trixxie Nitely.

Ermandalee’s works are always an eye catcher. Her choices for angles and colors are always amazing giving often a feeling of reality to her artworks.
Lo Coeur also has her own signature. Her pics looks like water paints. Her romantic style is her signature.

Both artists have their own style and this is what made Trinity choose them for this special request. She wanted the exhibition being an ode to this beautiful garden and to the beauty of Nature in general.

The exhibition will show 2 series of 10 artworks from both artists all over the wonderful garden. It will run from the 21st of February till  March 21st.

The event will start with an opening party on the 21st at noon SLT with the participation of Hippie Bowman as DJ.

So come by, visit the exhibit, have a drink (or two) and enjoy the party. If you can’t be at the opening, you’ll have one whole month to visit this beautiful art show.

(Moumou’s Square is Trinity Yazimoto’s land. It hosts Petit Chat mainstore and underground, Petit Chat Art Gallery, displaying Trinity’s artworks. It’s open to public anytime)
