Plato's Academy features discussions of philosophical Subjects for Second Life Residents Ramon Federal Reporting...

Plato’s Academy provides a “down-to-earth” venue for the consideration of serious issues
Plato Greybeard and Violette McMinnar have created a site and a group called Plato’s Academy that provide Second Life residents with an unequaled opportunity for down-to-earth discussion of important philosophical subjects. You can find it at:

The group meets every other Sunday at 8 am SLT. The next meeting of the group will be on Sunday, May 29, 2011. The question to be discussed at that time will be “Equality: Fact or Fiction?”
The idea for the site and group came from Plato Greybeard, who joined Second Life about two-and-a-half years ago and decided that he wanted to create a place for the serious consideration of important issues from a philosophical perspective.
He told the SL Enquirer in an interview at his site that he was lucky to find Violette McMinnar, who was “totally important” in building the sim that houses the group and in doing the important and time-consuming administrative work that is essential to the smooth operation of the discussion group on an on-going basis.
Violette added that she is motivated to support the group because she “likes to hear others’ views.”
Previously-featured discussion topics have included “Mechanisms of Offensiveness,” “Limits of Free Will,” and “What is Truth?”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday May 3, 2011 -The SL grid is turning purple!-

From May 7 to May 13 the Second Life grid will be turning purple!
Thousands of Second Life residents will be painting their stores and houses purple, wearing purple clothes, purple hair, even purple skin, in order to show their support for the Relay For Life of Second Life and to spread a purple Message of Hope.
Relay For Life® is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life® in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. In July teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! Spring has definitely Sprung and New and Seasoned Mamas are celebrating Mother’s Day across the grid and around the world. Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

To many, Mother’s Day signifies the day that we show our appreciation for the women that gave us life and nurtured us from children into our adulthood.  According to Wikipedia, my favorite source for all forms of official and unofficial, somewhat faulty and questionable knowledge, Mother’s Day was established by Anna Marie Jarvis following the death of her mother Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis on May 9, 1905.

What is Cinco de Mayo and why do we celebrate it?- Lanai Jarrico Reporting…

Well…If you think it is a celebration of intoxicating proportions, you are partially right, but if you wanted to get all Wikipedia nerdy about it, Cinco de Mayo is not a National or Mexican holiday nor is it Mexico’s Independence Day, like peeps might believe it to be.

The United States has taken over this unofficial holiday to give people more of  a reason to let go of their inhibitions and party on with drunken madness, but it has become commercialized.

OPERA JOVEN sim is in danger of closing-GUADALAJARA, JALISCO, MEXICO - La Perla Tapatia

According to the descriptions, Jalisco is one of the most beautiful States in Mexico. Guadalajara City is the capital. This SIM is a touristic replica built by OPERA JOVEN (www.operajoven.com) a RL nonprofit cultural & artistic organization. But, it is in danger of closing its doors like many other non profits being hurt by LL's decision to cancel the 50% discount given to non profits on islands tiers.
http://tinyurl.com/sl-discount-cancelled

Moby Randt writes in a notecard,

"This is a shame because these organizations provide SL many content and handle diverse interesting educative and cultural projects. Without this discount surely many of these organizations will abandon SL soon."

Without this discount, OPERA JOVEN cannot keep paying this sim and unfortunately it will disappear.
However, Linden Lab offers these organizations to pay in advance up to 2 years before 2011 to still benefit of this discount. http://tinyurl.com/sl-offer-pay-in-advance

At this time, six months costs $885 dollars, equivalent aprox. to L$250,000.

From 2011 this price will be doubled.

“Compressive Sensing”

Sensing and imaging systems are under increasing pressure to accommodate ever larger and higher-dimensional data sets; ever faster capture, sampling, and processing rates; ever lower power consumption; communication over ever more difficult channels; and radically new sensing modalities.

The foundation of today's digital data acquisition systems is the Shannon/Nyquist sampling theorem, which asserts that to avoid losing information when digitizing a signal or image, one must sample at least two times faster than the signal's bandwidth, at the so-called Nyquist rate.  Unfortunately, the physical limitations of current sensing systems combined with inherently high Nyquist rates impose a performance brick wall to a large class of important and emerging applications.
