Yellowstone Park in America is a supervolcano and it may be ready to erupt. A vast pool of magma lies under a thin crust. If it erupts it could cause a worldwide winter that would last for many decades and would threaten all life on earth.
Scientists are thinking of drilling down into the magma to lessen the danger and also to get lots and lots of free energy. What will happen if they do? Could the drilling set off an eruption? Could it destroy Earth’s magnetic field? What would it mean for the oil industry if Yellowstone produces an enormous amount of cheap geothermal energy?
Do you think we should take such risks? Or should we leave Nature to manage on its own? Are we facing the destruction of life or centuries of cheap, safe energy?
