Seanchai Library Wraps Up Successful Series with "The Sign of Four"

UW Avalumni, Second Life - Seanchai Library will commence Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Sign of Four on Sunday, November 6th at 1:30pm. The entire novel will be presented, with minimal adaptation, in one hour episodes through November 27th at Seanchai's Baker Street build, which has been in guest residency at the University of Washington iSchool in Second Life since June.

The story is set in 1888. The Sign of the Four has a complex plot involving India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts ("the Four" of the title) and two corrupt prison guards. It presents the detective's drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in the preceding novel, A Study in Scarlet (1887). It also introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan. Kayden Oconnell, John Morland, and Caledonia Skytower will present the story, voicing the characters and providing narration, live in voice.

"Conan Doyle wrote for series releases of his work in periodicals of the time, so folks should not be daunted if they miss one episode," encouraged Skytower.  Links to the story text, and information on the plot are provided in the 221B Lounge.

Baker Street was created for Seanchai's anniversary project "Crazy Eights' which was resident in the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) core regions last winter and spring. It was intended to represent one of Seanchai's most popular weekly sessions, it's "Tea Time" Sunday afternoons which have predominantly featured Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes canon, but have also featured the works of Jane Austen, Rudyard Kipling, Neil Gaiman, and The Adventures of Robin Hood.  Begun in 2012, in addition to featuring other authors, Tea Time has presented the entire Holmesian canon (56 short stories, four novels, and assorted shorter works) once, and are close to completing their second circuit.  

Baker Street was invited to its current residence for the summer, and which has been extended into the fall, presenting the short story collection His Last Bow, the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, some adaptive Holmes' literature, and concluding with The Sign of Four this month.

Baker Street features the "221B Lounge" for spoken word presentations, and also includes a number of shops and additional features that provide links to the Holmesian canon, adaptive literature, movies, television, and performers who have portrayed The Great Detective and the faithful Dr. John Watson over the years.  The area also provides landmarks to other Sherlock Holmes inspired locations on the grid, and information about Seanchai Library itself.

Seanchai Library's Baker Street will remain on UW Avalumni until the end of December.
