Meet Debi Palmira; Second Life’s Renowned DJ Manager- Piers Diesel Reporting...

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to be a music manager in Second Life?

It can be a tough and demanding job especially when you are Debi Palmira who managers Dj’s in Second Life. I took the opportunity while she wasn’t busy to chat with her about her work and to find out a little bit about her when she isn’t busy working.

Piers: Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Debi:  I am born and raised in Minnesota. Been on Second Life since Dec 2008. Music was a big part of my family's life whether it be playing an instrument (I played flute lol) to whatever was put on to listen on the stereo. So really, it's no surprise I gravitated to the music scene not long after starting SL.

Piers: Can you tell us a bit about your work in SL and how it came about?

Debi: About 3 months in SL I began working the club scene. Met a lot of people. Djs Hosts, club managers and owners. Then about the beginning of July '09 I had a DJ (Pen) come to me and say I should manage DJs. After some, well, nagging on his part and another DJ (Ransom) I agreed. Took a little while to come up with a name, but I did. And the 2 of them were the first ones to join. That was basically how Demented DJs was started.

Piers: How important is a good manager in SL?

Debi: I would have to say that it depends on what the DJ wants or needs. Some only want to spin, which is understandable, and don't want or have the patience to go scouting for clubs that may be a good fit for them, Or maybe they think someone else would be better suited to handle an issue with a club they are currently spinning in, or the management. There are plenty of DJs that do just fine without one. I believe that Demented DJs is one of a kind because the group does not revolve around 1 person. We all support each other. They all have a say as to what happens on the site and in the group. Nick (Uneek) and Kana work their magic with the site. KM and Lockstone have done cover art. Lockstone the current logo. Nick also composes originals like the composition you hear on the home page. Each person in the group contributes in some way or another. But most of all we are there for each other and help each other. Demented will be around for 5 years this summer, and the ones in the group have been in as long as day 1 to almost a year. It's the people in this group that make it what it is. Their love for music. It is not about who is popular and who's not. It's about the passion for the music. As for me, if their rl frees them up to do sets in sl, I'll see what I can find. Occasionally club managers/owners come to me when they are looking for DJs. When it comes to finding a club, my goal is to find a good fit for them so they can stay there long term. I also promote their mixes that are on the site available for download. Be at their sets if RL isn't intruding. I'll even host for them.

Piers: If someone wanted to become a manager in SL how would you begin?

Debi: Well the first thing is, you need to love music, and love what you do. Take it a step at a time. If you're going to have a group of DJs, remember that yes, it is a group, but each is an individual and each one will have different ideas of what they want to do with their DJing. The DJ is in control of what he/she wants to do. You need to listen to them. Communication is vital because without it, it all falls apart. Also to be honest!

Piers: What would be your favourite DJ in RL?

Debi: Ha. Well this one is easy, and it's not just 1.It's all the DJs in Demented. Yes, I know I'm biased, but oh well. LOL. It doesn't matter if they do it for fun in SL, or through social media, Internet radio, rl gigs. Jose has never even been in SL. I've gotten to know each of their RL as they have mine. There's even a couple DJs that used to be in the group that I would add to the list. I can't even listen to the radio anymore without thinking "Oh this would sound better with the bpms bumped up, or more bass, or mixed" lol i just can't anymore. And yes, it's all their fault lol. I'm very fortunate to have this group of people in my life.

Piers: What do you like to do to relax when you’re not busy working in sl?

Debi: Explore sims, throw on a mix and go do a hunt, although I haven't done that in a while. Facebook games lol.

Piers: What's next for you for the rest of 2014 and beyond?

Debi: Demented Djs will exist for as long as they want it to. I may have started the group, but it belongs to everyone in it. From time to time there's a lull because of their rl for whatever reason. I want to get Demented FM off the ground. Add a DJ or 2 or 3 lol, round out the genres more. And maybe work on a project or 2. Smile.
