Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father’s day an official holiday in the United States. It was only right to give dad his day since Mother’s Day had been around since 1908.

This holiday is a celebrated to honor fatherhood on the third Sunday in June.  Other countries around the world have also taken on this holiday too but the dates vary. For example, In Italy, Belgium and Bolivia, Father’s day is celebrated on March 19^th. In Romania it is observed on the second Sunday of May. In South Korea, both parents are celebrated with Parent’s Day on May 8^th. 

In Egypt, Syria and Lebanon, this day is celebrated June 21; the first day of Summer.

No matter where we are in the world and on what day, celebrating fathers has become a worldwide tradition. Without a Father, there would be no us, unless we are a miracle child created through Immaculate Conception.  Father’s aren’t only those that contributed to your creation, they don’t have to have a genetic connection to be considered a father, he can be the one that stepped up to the plate and took on the role of helping raise and mold you into the person you are today. So, whoever it is you consider to be dad, be sure to let him know how much you love and appreciate all he has done for you, maybe even apologize for all the headaches you gave him as you were growing up. The most important reason for this special day, is letting him know you care, not just on this day, but every day.

I'm a daddy's girl and ain't ashamed to say it proudly. One of the big questions for Father’s day is what do I get Dad? I usually come up with something good....I think.

If you are stuck on ideas, getting dad something he will use depends. What does he like to do? Most have some kind of hobby that includes being outdoors, fishing, having a beer, building something or tinkering with gadgets.

 My dad is like a renaissance man. He is an artist, musician, mechanic, carpenter, electrician, karaoke extraordinaire, traveler and all around cool kinda guy that seems to know a little about everything. He is also a simple man in his wants and needs. He is one that finds joy in the little things in life and gets all excited just hearing a funny story or coming over and playing with my dog, Hollywood.

Through the years, I have gotten my father things I thought would be useful like a nose hair trimmer, various colognes, a cool Jerry Garcia collection tie, cuff links, a nice dark wood watch display box with a glass top so he can see all his watches in a convenient way, a teddy bear figurine holding a guitar that I handmade and a variety of other things.  His reaction of course was always very grateful for whatever it was I gave him. He also has a great sense of humor, especially when it came to that watch box.  He asked me if it was to make it easier for burglars to view the loot before swiping them all.  Another year I got him a miniature ship that he proudly displayed on his mantel. Every year I find it harder to find something unique that he doesn’t already have.   One thing is for certain, telling him that I love him and letting him know that I am thankful for all he has done for me through the years is something I think he cherishes the most. That is something that can’t be bought, exchanged, put away in a closet or returned. But I really hope he likes the freezer this year...I figured it would be put to use in his gazebo this summer  loaded with Italian ice, hot dogs and hamburgers. He really loves to BBQ too.

If you are reading this, I'm  sorry for all  the prank calls before * 69, my moody teenage years, the mortifying gag gift you opened in front of everyone on your birthday,the time we aggravated you so bad on a road trip to Washington DC that you nearly left me and my brother on the side of the road, and that time I rode your riding mowing into a ditch and you had to push it all the way up the hill in the rain….but the spray paint incident and the tree house..I swear wasn’t me, it was my brother! (lol) 

 To all the dads that stepped up and did whatever you had to do for your children, showed them unconditional love and endured the headaches. You are the man.
