Whether we realize it or not, we are all connected by
something. Read on to learn about a group that presents discussions on matters
that pertain to everybody.
Virtually Speaking is a group that was formed in 2007 by Widget Whiteberry, Jay Ackroyd and Stuart Zaurak, to inform the community on current events that are happening in a wide range of topics. This gang holds discussions via radio station and is streamed on their website and at their location in Second Life.
I had the privilege on being invited to the clique’s next affair.

On Wednesday, April 24th, at 2P.M. PST, Virtually Speaking ran its science program hosted by TomLevenson Resident (known in the offline world as Tom Levenson). In this week’s presentation, Mr. Levenson is joined by journalist and author Maryn Mkenna to talk on the subject of “Looming Antibiotic Disaster.”
Before we discuss the different points of this theme, let’s get to know the two people who came together through the power of technology to discourse this motif.
Tom Levenson teaches science writing at MIT and is a filmmaker.
Maryn Mkenna is the author of two books: The Fatal Menace of MRSA and Beating Back the Devil: On the Front Lines with the Disease Detectives of the Epidemic Intelligence Service. She also writes for several publications on the subjects of global health and food policy.
Now that we are acquainted with the folks who had a discussion about this topic, let’s talk about each section of it as it was discoursed.
The first two points that were spoken about pertaining to this motif were about superbugs. Specifically the type of superbugs that was spoken about in detail was the kind of MRSA that is untreatable and Tuberculosis. What is MRSA? MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It’s when the staph bacteria in a person becomes infected. When this bacilli gets tainted, it makes it very difficult to cure. Tuberculosis is an infection of the lungs in an individual. The incurable versions of MRSA and Tuberculosis are on the rise, making the need for stricter sanitary practices crucial.
The last division that was discoursed was about the political climate on these medical crises throughout the world. It’s no secret that many people don’t like dealing with issues that don’t affect them. This fact especially holds true in the political arena. The problem with this concept is that there are so many problems that people need assistance in fixing and/or addressing and their calls for help are being repeatedly ignored.
What is
the solution?
In my opinion, more committees need to be made to handle the
health concerns of the public. If issues are able to be solved on the local
level, governments can devote their time to matters they feel are worth their
attention.
I truly enjoyed attending this event by the Virtually Speaking group and am grateful for their dedication in providing information on subjects that are important to us all.
