When Spring time comes, we trade our coats and mittens for something to show off that inch more of skin. Why not do it with a vintage flare? Nothing screams more fun, love, and spring time to me then floral prints, shorts, and dresses.
I was honored to meet Nova Monroe during one of my shopping trips to get ready for spring. Her style and shop is the epitome of spring.
I don’t consider myself a fashionista, I don’t even consider myself a guru of fashion, but I do consider myself, my tastes, and likes the same as the girl next door. With that in mind, that doesn't mean I don’t want some style to my jeans, dresses, and other apparel I rock. Whoever said average had to mean plain and boring? Besides, last I knew I was a big girl dressing myself.
Her name alone, Nova Monroe, sets my mind to Marilyn Monroe, 50’s and 60’s style, vintage, and laid-back comfortable. Meeting her face to face, I was completely blown away by her style. The things she sells has a flare of unique and significance in their own right. I could tell this was a woman of my own heart, every piece she molded and crafted was personal and a reflection of herself. This chick is on to something, so I had to sit down with her for an SLE interview. I wanted to know about her and wanted to share her with the world as much as I could. It interested me to know more about how she handles her business.
Interview with Nova Monroe
Definate: What is something that you've found as a challenge since you began your business?
Nova: Time management, definitely, haha. I found that the more I created, the more ideas popped into my head. Which is good, of course, but I ended up overwhelming myself with deadlines and projects that any Virgo will make sure happen.
Definate: What has inspired your style?
Nova: Music festivals, city streets, graveyards, New Wave coffee shops, southern France, Post Punk, fire escapes, The Smiths, clean sheets, acoustic guitars, parks, The Cure, back alleys, billboards, Tokyo street fashion, thrift stores, David Bowie, and campfires. I realize it's a jumble of visuals, but that's mostly what I try to convey into the clothing: it's not just a garment, it's a story.
Definate: What sets you apart from other creators here?
Nova: I honestly don't know. I'd like to say that 'I'm completely original and my style is brand new', but like the other creators, it all comes from inspiration. What I can tell you is, I just like making things I like to wear. Little Bones is basically a look into my closet, whether people enjoy it or not, I'm making things I enjoy!
Definate: If there was just one thing you could do, what would it be, business wise?
Nova: Keep this success building and continue the interaction that I have now, with my customers, in the future. I've noticed a certain amount of pride that comes with success, and I'm trying my absolute best to keep a dialog with the beautiful people who enjoy my style. The interaction is key, for me.
Definate: So, tell me, what's going on at Little Bones? New release? Upcoming events?
Nova: Me and my sweatshop of unicorns are currently sewing our fingers to the bone to get the Spring line out. Part I is currently complete, but part II is lagging a bit. Just getting perfection!
Definate: What do you want our readers to take from this article, things they should know about you and your Little Bones?
Nova: I suppose that Little Bones is very accessible, and very easy to get lost in. There are a lot of small details that you will find in each piece, that you're be discovering new reasons to love them. One thing I'd like them to take is that I appreciate them, and their support.
Definate: To any reader that may be looking for a merchant, are you available for events, exclusives, and hunts?
Nova: Yes, and no. I have a few events and things to take care of sooner than later, so, if an event was scheduled and all the details were worked out beforehand, I couldn't turn it down.
Definate: What type of events, sales, and other going ons would you be openly minded to?
Nova: I'd like to do some hunts, some giveaways too. There are many freebies coming in the horizon, as a 'thank you' basically. I suppose that could be considered a sale, no?
Definate: Right now you'd be considered small business, but that doesn't mean you don't have advice. What would be some advice you could give to that creative person that has thought of becoming a merchant?
Nova: Do it because you enjoy it, not because you want to make money. Most of the time, the people who are in it for the money, are the ones who quit too quickly. Love what you do, make what you like, and hope to whoever you worship that someone relates to you and your product.
