Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, North Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated saint's day in the world.
Dublin in SL |
Second Life also celebrates St Patrick’s Day. Jane Bookmite is the manager of The Blarney Stone a great Irish pub in Dublin, which consists of three sims, it is a large establishment with multiple entertainment venues, shops, residences and tourist districts. Jane tells us a bit about herself and Dublin in Second Life.
Manager of The Blarney Stone |
‘A friend asked me to try Second Life I thought I would not care much for it. Four years later, here I am.’
‘Dublin is the vision of Ham Ramble, the owner. It is over 6 years old and going strong.
The Blarney Stone is modeled after a real pub in Dublin, what more Irish a name could their be?’
The Blarney Stone |
‘The Blarney Stone was built by Robin Winter, taking a couple of months. I am the team leader and manager. We have a large staff of hosts, DJ's, security agents, and specialists.’
‘St Patrick’s Day is our big Day of the year. The sim is always open to people with many scheduled events. On St' Patrick's day we start at 5 am, and will not finish until after 11pm.’
The doors are always open |
‘ I do mix real life with Second Life. I think everybody does to one extent or another. I am pretty much the same person in real life and Second Life. Although I do have different occupations!’
a gathering of friends |
‘Dublin is unique in Second Life. We have live shows and DJ events. What we don't have is over gesturing and impersonal greetings.’
The Blarney Stone regulars |
‘We care about people, and make a genuine effort to make each and every guest feel welcome. We have great chats and fun. Dublin is also a safe place to enjoy the Second Life experience.’
Robt Rhode |
I also spoke with Robt Rhode a member of staff at The Blarney Stone, here’s what he had to say regarding his Second Life and Dublin.
I had been spending much time on Guardian (UK newspaper) talk boards where I had heard of Second Life. It sounded fascinating.’
‘More specifically, regarding Second Life Dublin, I had been sailing the Irish coast and I thought I'd take a look at virtual life Dublin when I got here.’
‘Dublin is an amazing creation. Blarney Stone is not an uncommon name for Irish pubs. This bar is modeled after Gogarty's in Temple Bar, Dublin.’
‘ I seldom cross the line between my real life and Second Life, but I am certainly enjoying my time in virtual Dublin.
‘I was a longtime regular, and now more recently staff. Dublin evokes a certain loyalty and I felt an obligation to give back for all that Dublin has given me.’
Thank you to both Jane and Robert for sharing your experiences and Happy St Patrick’s Day to all.
