After a hugely successful production of Alice in WonderSLand, the Avatar Repertory Theater (ART) continues their tradition of pushing the boundaries of creativity and what’s possible in virtual worlds. On Saturday, November 12 at 3pm, ART brings Lewis Carroll’s characters to life in a new production of Through the Looking Glass based on Carroll’s sequel work to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. View the You Tube Trailer, and get a taste of the magic and mischief that ART has prepared for audiences.
Curiouser and curiouser, through the looking-glass, where things look the same, only the things go the other way. . . . Twas brillig, and Alice finds herself moving through a large chessboard, where the Red Queen gives her lessons in royalty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee battle and rattle, Humpty Dumpty sits on a wall, and the Red and White Knight try to fight for her.
The new production takes its visual inspiration from the original artwork of John Tenniel and integrates lively animations, original costumes, and a fresh musical score based on familiar nursery rhymes. ART certainly could not be hanging their creative hats on more fertile ground. Tenniel was the principal political cartoonist for England’s Punch magazine for over 50 years, and those wry visual commentaries on his country and the times are an intrinsic part of the period’s social, literary, and art histories. Tenniel’s work on both of Lewis Carroll’s Alice books stands side-by-side with Ernest H. Shepard, (Interpreting Kenneth Grahame and A.A. Milne) John Leech (Dicken’s A Christmas Carol), and others as the creators of definitive illustrative works of classic literature. They are some of my favorite works of their times.
Through the Looking Glass is planned for eight public performances on the Grid ending December 11th. Directed by MadameThespian Underhill, the production features a cast of some of the finest actors currently plying their craft in SL. ART functions as a traditional theatrical company, where members of the troupe not only perform, but also work equally behind the pixels at all aspects of production.
