SL ARTS & LITERATURE: Prim Perfect Magazine Celebrates 4th Anniversary and New Headquarters

The SL Enquirer has a new neighbor in Costa Rica.  Prim Perfect Magazine has taken up residence on San Jose East on the quarter sim immediately to the north of SLE.  The magazine and its attendant publications is not a noob to the Second Life grid.  Sunday, May 1 they celebrated their 4th Anniversary with a four hour long party that included performances by DRUM, Ceci Dover, Joaquin Gustav, and Christopher135 Quan.  The enthusiastic gathering met the ultimate standard of all amazingly successful events in SL – it crashed the region.

Prim Perfect Publications is owned by Saffia Widdershins, who also serves as Editor-in-Chief.  Her publishing influence extends beyond the single magazine.  Prim Perfect Publications maintains several blogs supporting its varied interests, and publishes The Primgraph which celebrates vintage and steampunk cultures in the virtual world.  Prim Perfect Publications also works in partnership with Treet TV to produce two different virtual shows on the SL grids largest cable network: Designing Worlds, which features outstanding spatial design and designers; and Metaverse Arts, which look in depth at the artists and arts in the Second Life and across the Metaverse.

Ms. Widdershins came to the SL grid fifty-one months ago – that’s four years and three months.  As she was beginning to furnish her first virtual home, she noted that there were plenty of resources covering fashion in SL, but not as many covering other forms of design: Prim Perfect was born.  The magazine is a resource for those who want to upgrade their virtual home, find new ways to fill them, stay current on the latest innovations and styles, as well as people wanting advice on using prims cleverly, or making rooms look better - from tweaks to complete makeovers.  Prim Perfect provides this and more, including a problem page for those who have problems with homes and furniture - Prim Perfect will do its best to help!  The magazine also serves as an inspiration to builders and designers.  The work of a diversity of creators can be found in the canon of Prim Perfect issues.

The new headquarters is stunning.  My virtual beat is based in literature, but in the corporeal world I have a background in design that goes back several decades, and this opportunity was too delicious to pass up.  I appreciate what a marvelous tool SL is for the creative designing mind.  The Prim Perfect Publications HQ was built by Dijodi Dubratt with interior design by pitsch Parx.  It is an elegant symphony of arcs, angles and open space.  The use of glass walls and warm colors makes it inviting to explore and blends in with the feel of the region. The warm sand tones and cool glass are perfectly complimented by the landscape work of Aisling Sinclair.  One of my favorite elements of the design are the tree-like pavilions that combine wooden structure with iridescent glass panels.  Sinclair takes this element from the structure and mimics it in the use of plants and the flow of the landscaping with a lovely blending of plant and water features.  Had I not been told otherwise, I would have surmised that they were all done by the same hand.  The sum total is a bold design that makes a unique statement about a Publisher and the Publications that celebrate excellence in spatial design for the virtual world.

It was through Prim Perfect and Designing Worlds that I was connected with the work of virtual designer Cierra Anatine, and became a huge fan. Happy Birthday Prim Perfect Publications!  Thank you Saffia and Staff for featuring the varied visual richness of the virtual world in so many ways, and celebrating creativity.
