SL ARTS & LITERATURE: Ireland's Pirate Queen Comes to Second Life

Imagination Island's Seanchai Library is celebrating March by paying tribute to a remarkable Irish woman with Grace O’Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen presented Friday, March 11th at 7pm at the Seanchai Library (Imagination Island); Sunday, March 13th at Noon at the Mango Yacht Club (Fruit Islands) and as part of the Opening Ceremonies at StoryFest 2011 celebrating World Storytelling Day – that presentation will take place at 1pm SLT on Saturday, March 19th at the Grand Story Circle in the Branwen Arts Center (Bran).

Born in 1530, Grace O’Malley grew up to be considered the most “… notorious woman in all the costes (coasts) of Ireland.” Lord Justice Drury called her “a great spoiler and chief commander and director of thieves and murderers at sea.”  She was a rover, a raider, and such a scourge to the English that her name appears regularly in Elizabethan state papers. Queen Elizabeth put a price of five hundred pounds on her head, and O’Malley’s historic confrontation with the Queen in her court is central to the legend of “Granya O’Malley.”  She died at Rockfleet Castle, it’s said, in 1603, the same year as Queen Elizabeth.  Aoife Lorefield has created a script that encompasses both the fact and the myth of Grace O’Malley, drawing literary material from a variety of sources.

Librarian Derry McMahon with Storytellers Aoife Lorefield and Caledonia Skytower will portray the Irish Pirate Queen during different portions of her life.  All times listed are SLT, and performances are done live in voice.  The Imagination Island and Fruit Island performances will benefit the Seanchai Library’s featured charity for the month of March: Project Children
